Is eTIMS really about bringing informal businesses into the tax bracket, OR forcing compliant businesses to pay more taxes?

KRA recently announced that expense claims made by businesses must be accompanied by eTIMS invoices, otherwise they won't be tax deductible. The government has sold this as a move to force taxpayers to be tax compliant, and to bring informal businesses into the tax bracket. Is this true though? Will it bring more businesses into compliance, or is it making it so hard for compliant businesses to claim expenses, forcing them to pay more taxes? Is it true that only taxpayers who make returns pay taxes? Is it true that Kenya's informal sector doesn't pay taxes? Is it true that salaried folk make better voting choices because they feel "more pain" from bad governance? In this brief episode, Kellie weighs in on the eTIMS issue, and the over-taxed citizen's responsibility insofar as tax and governance are concerned. How does a government develop and support a creative sector?

In this episode, I am joined by Dr Akati Khasiani, the Head of Grants, Programs and Inclusion at Heva Fund to discuss the Kenyan creative industry. We discuss how policy supports the development of the sector, how the industry is organised, and what WE as citizens can do to promote arts and culture. As always, thank you for listening. If you liked this episode, please share it with your family and friends, and when you gather together, discuss these issues as this is how we grow as a people. Part 2: Africa debt crises - A case of hypnosis of policy makers or a design problem?

YES, our policy makers and political leaders continue to make mistakes that have been costly to the continent's development. That notwithstanding, is the global financing system designed to keep Africa underdeveloped? Grieve Chelwa [https://x.com/gchelwa?lang=en], an Associate Professor of Political Economy and Chair of the Social Sciences Department at the Africa institute joins us to answer this question in this 2-part series. ********************************************************************************************* Thank you so much for listening! Kenya's broken university funding model

Correction: In the heat of this debate, Kwame mentions as school that costs KES 80,000 per year. This is per term. With the above, listen to this heated and informative discussion about the failed/failing university funding model. We discuss the methodology of determining funding, and the underlying issues with higher education funding in Kenya. ********************************************************************** Thank you so much for listening!
