A rookie defender came off the bench and won the first match ever played at Centennial Stadium by scoring her first ever NWSL goal. That's how Denver Summit beat the Portland Thorns 2-1 — and it wasn't even the biggest story on the field. Portland is 3rd in the NWSL. Denver is 11th. Eleven points apart. I ran the numbers anyway, and Portland's expected-goal difference is actually worse than Denver's — the third-place team is being outplayed by the underlying process of the eleventh-place team. Yazmeen Ryan scored her third goal of the season Sunday — a rocket into the top corner against the team that gave her the Golden Boot a year ago.
