The Cup of Joe Show
I thought I was a crackhead going to AA. Then someone explained what alcoholism was. Brian H. spent most of his life trying to survive without ever really understanding himself. From early arrests and crack cocaine addiction to jail cells, probation violations, and prison, Brian’s life became a cycle of destruction while he was still a teenager. By the time he landed in a Georgia jail at 6’3” and only 125 pounds, addiction was killing him. That’s where everything started to change. A hardened inmate named Melvin shared what God had done in his life and introduced Brian to the idea that he might finally be powerless over alcohol and drugs. But even after jail, meetings, sponsors, and years around recovery, Brian still couldn’t fully connect the dots. Until one Big Book study changed everything. For the first time, Brian understood the obsession of the mind, the allergy of the body, and why alcoholics are simply not like other drinkers. Recovery stopped being something he attended and became something he lived. Brian shares how the Joe and Charlie “Big Book Comes Alive” recordings became one of the most important recovery tools in his life. After first hearing them in 1991, he became a lifelong student and teacher of the Big Book, eventually helping continue the Big Book seminar tradition in South Florida for more than 16 years. As Brian says, “Recovery is an invitation.” In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Brian shares why recovery is more than abstinence, why the Big Book still matters, and how his life has been transformed through the twelve steps.
