MOVE Through A Black Anarchist Perspective

episode MOVE Through A Black Anarchist Perspective cover

Description

Before the city of Philadelphia dropped a bomb on a Black neighborhood, MOVE spent over a decade building one of the most uncompromising radical organizations in American history. Founded by John Africa in the early 1970s, MOVE combined Black liberation politics with a sweeping critique of modern civilization — technology, education, government, and "the system" itself. In this episode, we trace MOVE's arc from their communal house in Powelton Village to the 1978 standoff that sent nine members to prison, to the catastrophic 1985 bombing that killed 11 people and burned down 61 homes. Along the way, we wrestle with hard questions: What made MOVE so compelling — and so controversial? What does the state's response tell us about the limits of Black radical organizing? And what do we do with organizations that cause harm while also facing tremendous repression? Writing History from Below W/ On Our Own Authority Modibo Kadalie & Andrew Zonneveld Part 1/2

What does it take to build revolutionary institutions that last? In Part 1 of this interview, we’re joined by Andrew and Modibo of On Our Own Authority, a radical publishing collective and community bookstore in metro Atlanta. Together, we discuss the politics of publishing, preserving movement history, and creating spaces where revolutionary ideas can be studied, debated, and put into practice. The conversation explores Black radical traditions, oral history, direct democracy, social ecology, independent bookstores, and why movements need physical spaces that outlive social media and political trends. Along the way, we reflect on writing history from below, the role of archives in liberation struggles, and what it means to build intellectual and cultural infrastructure rooted in collective power rather than hierarchy. 01:26 Intro 05:14 what was a young you like 10:51 Origins of The Dugout 14:13 How does the Dugout see our work being preserved or impactful 17:53 what have you learned through the process of having a bookstore 29:36 how has your approach to publishing evolved? 35:57 what key changed have you made to make model ore sustainable 10:46 Atlanta Radical Book fair 44:57 what does de-centering heroes in history look like? Why We Don't Love Amerikkka

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, we ask a simple question: what does America mean to those living through its violence today? From expanding state repression and political prisoners to the mythology of the Fourth of July, we reflect on what it means to reject nationalism while committing ourselves to solidarity, community, and revolutionary struggle. Along the way, we discuss the Prairie Land defendants, Baldwin's complicated relationship to America, the future of resistance, and what it takes to build movements that can survive the years ahead. -------------------------------------------- EPISODE CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro 09:53 Why do we care 17:01 What are ways to engage with the propaganda of July 4th 36:46 Reading and discussion of Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin 42:53 Reading Gord Hill 49:40 Reflection ---------------------------------------------- Mentioned Media: BOOKS  📚The Counter Revolution of 1836 Texas slavery & Jim Crow and the roots of American Fascism by Gerald Horne  [https://bookshop.org/search?keywords=Gerald+Horne] 🔗 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxpH1iEeGV4]In The Belly Magazine: https://inthebelly.squarespace.com/ [https://inthebelly.squarespace.com/] Support independent bookstores by purchasing with our affiliate link on through Bookshop.org [https://Bookshop.org]: https://bookshop.org/lists/what-we-re-reading-at-the-dugout [https://bookshop.org/lists/what-we-re-reading-at-the-dugout]  OTHER MEDIA 🔗 Defending Dissent In Texas: An Interview with DFW Prairieland Defense Committee [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxpH1iEeGV4] —--------------------------------------------- Stay connected with The Dugout! Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old father of three who was shot and killed by an ICE officer during an immigration operation in Houston. We look at the contradictions in the case, why Lorenzo's family is demanding an independent investigation, and how ICE keeps relying on familiar claims about "perceived threats" and vehicles being used as weapons to justify deadly force. I also place this case in the broader history of policing, immigration enforcement, and the expanding power of the carceral state. ------------------- Watch on Prince's Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw] Show Notes on Prince's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/prshakur/posts/i-c-e-just-again-163343424 [https://www.patreon.com/prshakur/posts/i-c-e-just-again-163343424] -------------------- EPISODE CHAPTERS 00:00 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw] Intro 01:08 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=68s] Details of the murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo 02:59 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=179s] Discrepancies in state and I.C.E. narrative 13:44 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=824s] Why this matters so much TO ME - growing up with an incarcerated undocumented father 18:06 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=1086s] Angela Davis in BLACK POWER MXTAPE on the hypocrisy of state and white supremacist violence 21:50 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=1310s] How the state and I.C.E. justified lethal force 24:40 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkzWK1MDJjw&t=1480s] Considerations for a path forward - independent investigations, abolition and beyond --------------------- Show Notes Primary sources on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo case: PBS NewsHour – "A Mexican father was shot and killed by an ICE officer, his son is demanding an independent probe" https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/a-mexican-father-was-shot-and-killed-by-an-ice-officer-his-son-is-demanding-an-independent-probe [https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/a-mexican-father-was-shot-and-killed-by-an-ice-officer-his-son-is-demanding-an-independent-probe] The Guardian – Coverage of the son's response and calls for an independent investigation, includes the Sosa-Celis and Ruben Ray Martinez cases https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/08/texas-ice-shooting-victim-son [https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/08/texas-ice-shooting-victim-son] The Intercept – "ICE, DHS, and social media / white supremacist violence" https://theintercept.com/2026/05/21/ice-dhs-social-media-white-supremacist-violence/ [https://theintercept.com/2026/05/21/ice-dhs-social-media-white-supremacist-violence/] ----------------------------------- Stay connected with The Dugout! The Spook Who Sat By The Door: Most Radical Black Film of the 70s?

We sit down to talk about THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR; Based on the novel by Sam Greenlee, the film follows Dan Freeman, the first Black CIA officer, who uses the counterinsurgency and intelligence tactics he learns from the U.S. government to train Black militants in Chicago and build an underground revolutionary movement. We explore its gender politics and the limited role afforded to women in its revolutionary vision, the hierarchical model of organizing it presents, and the ways the film reproduces familiar masculine revolutionary archetypes centered on secrecy, military discipline, and charismatic male leadership. Fifty years later, The Spook Who Sat by the Door remains essential viewing for what it imagines about liberation and the questions it leaves unresolved. The Impact of STAR / Street Transvestite Action Revolutionary

What was STAR, and why does its legacy still matter today? In this episode, we dive into the history of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), the radical organization founded by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. We trace STAR's origins, its mutual aid and housing programs, and its role in the broader struggle for queer and trans liberation. We also examine the realities of state repression, discuss current conditions facing LGBTQ+ communities, and reflect on what organizers today can learn from STAR's vision of collective care and survival.
