They then meet a melancholy ferryman, burdened by a peculiar punishment that isolates him from all creatures, whose quiet solitude and simple kindness offer a brief solace before the travellers press onward into the shaded forest beyond.

The Lost Princess of Oz Chapter 13 - The Truth Pond

In which the Frogman, proud and vain, encounters a cross Winkie woman and discovers a magical pond whose waters compel him to speak only the truth, much to his dismay. He then persuades his companion Cayke to consider bathing in the enchanted water so that their travels might be free of deceit, though she stubbornly refuses to do so.
