Ep.127 Before There Were Kings

Ep.126 The Bronze Age Collapse

The books of Samuel begin during one of the most dramatic periods in ancient history. Long before Samuel anointed Israel's first kings, the ancient world experienced the Bronze Age Collapse—a period marked by drought, famine, earthquakes, invasions, population migrations, and the fall of great empires. In this episode, we explore the rise and fall of the Bronze Age world, the interconnected trade networks that united Egypt, the Hittites, Babylonia, and other great powers, and the events that led to their decline. We examine the archaeological evidence for prolonged drought in the eastern Mediterranean, the role of the Sea Peoples, the collapse of trade, and the emergence of the Iron Age. Finally, we connect these world-changing events to the biblical period of the Judges and consider how the collapse of the old world may have created the conditions for Israel's rise as a kingdom under Samuel, Saul, and David. Ep.125 The Redeemer

Ruth chapters 3 and 4 bring the story of redemption to its powerful conclusion as Naomi guides Ruth toward Boaz, the kinsman redeemer capable of restoring their family line and inheritance. At the threshing floor, Ruth makes a bold request for Boaz to take her under his protection through marriage, and Boaz responds with honor and integrity. Yet another redeemer stands closer in relation, forcing the matter to be settled publicly at the city gate before the elders of Bethlehem. This episode explores the ancient customs surrounding redemption, inheritance, marriage, and covenant loyalty in Israel during the time of the Judges. Ep.124 Favor in the Field

Ruth chapter 2 introduces Boaz, a man of standing in Bethlehem, and begins to reveal the powerful theme of redemption in the Book of Ruth. As Ruth seeks provision by gleaning in the fields during the harvest, she unknowingly enters the field of Boaz—a kinsman of Naomi’s family and a potential redeemer.
