In which a seafaring gentleman named Captain Samuel Prodder, weather-beaten and hearty in spirit, undertakes a journey to London to visit a niece he has never before met, sharing with curious fellow travellers the tale of his long absence and hopeful reunion. Upon his arrival at the grand family estate, he learns the passage of many years and changes that time has wrought, and expresses a simple wish to be recognised and embraced by his kin, that he might harbour peace in his heart.

As a thunderstorm brews overhead, the unfolding mystery casts a foreboding veil over the tranquil estate, leaving those within it to grapple with doubts and fears beneath the restless sky.

In which the handsome but morally dubious James Conyers takes up his post as trainer at Mellish Park, appointing the reluctant and troubled Steeve Hargraves as his attendant in an arrangement tinged with latent malice.
