Meanwhile, back at the house, uneasy guests and family alike find their evening disturbed by troubling news of a murder in the wood, casting a sombre shadow over the gathering.

His slovenly attendant, Steeve Hargraves, unnoticed yet observing, uncovers a hidden paper that hints at the tangled web of fortunes and secrets that quietly govern their uneasy existence.

In which a seafaring gentleman named Captain Samuel Prodder, weather-beaten and hearty in spirit, undertakes a journey to London to visit a niece he has never before met, sharing with curious fellow travellers the tale of his long absence and hopeful reunion. Upon his arrival at the grand family estate, he learns the passage of many years and changes that time has wrought, and expresses a simple wish to be recognised and embraced by his kin, that he might harbour peace in his heart.
