The MindShift Show: Turning Mindsets Into ICAN with Pamela E. Bloomfield
What I learned standing in front of an Aquarium Nature never questions its purpose. Welcome back to The MindShift Show: Turning Mindsets Into ICAN. I'm Pamela E. Bloomfield, and today I want to share something that caught my attention in the most unexpected way. Recently, my husband and I visited the Georgia Aquarium. We stood in front of an aquarium, just watching. I realized that I was not scrolling. Not rushing. Not thinking about my to-do list. Just watching. It made me smile. I watched fish glide through the water. I noticed a bright orange starfish stretched across dark rocks. Nearby was a beautiful purple sea star, resting quietly in its space. There were fish with markings and patterns that looked as though they had been painted by hand. And as I stood there taking it all in, I found myself thinking: Nature never questions its God-given purpose. No hesitation. No comparison. No doubt. Everything belonged exactly where it was. And isn't it interesting how we humans spend so much of our lives trying to blend in — when nature spends its time simply fulfilling its purpose? That orange starfish wasn't apologizing for taking up space. The purple sea star wasn't trying to become a fish. They simply existed as they were created. And together, they formed something beautiful. That got me thinking about us. Especially women over 40. Many of us have spent years adjusting ourselves. Dimming our voices. Setting aside dreams. Shrinking to fit into spaces that were never designed for us. We've shown up for our families, our careers, our communities. We've carried responsibilities that others never even noticed. But somewhere along the way, some of us lost sight of our God-given purpose. The gifts that came naturally to us. The passions we once talked about freely. The dreams that still whisper to us when life gets quiet. Nature doesn't struggle with identity the way we often do. A starfish doesn't wake up wondering if it's enough. A fish doesn't question whether it belongs. They simply live according to the purpose for which they were created. What would happen if we did the same? What would happen if we stopped believing that age somehow disqualifies us from purpose? If we trusted that God still has plans for this season of our lives? One thing stood out to me that day — the brightest creatures weren't standing alone. They were surrounded by dark rocks. Shadows. Deep water. And it reminded me of something important. The difficult seasons of our lives do not erase our purpose. Often, they reveal it. Without those dark rocks, the orange starfish would not have stood out in quite the same way. The same is true for us. The disappointment. The setback. The loss. The season when you felt overlooked. The season when you wondered whether your best years were behind you. Those experiences didn't destroy your purpose. They helped uncover it. That's one reason I often say: Your experience is your expertise. Not because every experience was pleasant. But because every experience taught you something. Added depth. Wisdom. Perspective. Strength. So today I want to leave you with a simple question. When was the last time you paused long enough to reconnect with your God-given purpose? Not your job title. Not your responsibilities. Not the roles you've carried for years. Your purpose. The thing that brings life to your spirit. Because nature offers us a beautiful reminder. The starfish doesn't shrink. The ocean doesn't apologize for its beauty. And neither should you. There is a place in this world that only your God-given purpose can fill. There is wisdom only you can share. And there is a life still waiting to unfold when you choose to walk fully in who God created you to be.
