The Mongol Invasions: Fear, Strategy, and Total Destruction — Fexingo History
In 1260, Hulagu Khan's Mongol army descended on Aleppo, one of the great cities of the medieval world. The siege lasted just six days, but the aftermath was devastating — tens of thousands killed, the Great Mosque burned, and the city's famous library scattered. This episode explores the Mongol conquest of Aleppo within the broader context of the Ilkhanate's war against the Mamluks. We follow Hulagu's campaign through Syria, the role of his Christian allies — including the Armenian king Hethum I and the Crusader prince Bohemond VI — and the fateful decision to leave Kitbuqa Noyan in command while Hulagu turned east. That decision led directly to the Mongol defeat at Ayn Jalut, the battle that shattered the myth of Mongol invincibility. Along the way, we meet the Ayyubid prince al-Malik al-Nasir Yusuf, the historian Ibn al-Amid, and the Mamluk sultan Qutuz. We also examine Hulagu's controversial relationship with the Assassins and the destruction of their fortress at Alamut just four years earlier. #MongolSiegeOfAleppo #HulaguKhan #Ilkhanate #Mamluks #AynJalut #Kitbuqa #Aleppo1260 #CrusadersAndMongols #Alamut #Assassins #Qutuz #HethumI #BohemondVI #IbnAlAmid #MedievalSyria #MongolTactics #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]
