The Reinvention Code with Dorinda Walker
I just got back from Costa Rica celebrating my granddaughter's sweet 16. Three generations of women on a beach and one question wouldn't leave me alone: what are we actually passing down? Not the good stuff. We talk about that plenty. I mean the other things. The assumptions we carry into every room. The way we dismiss the young for being too green and push out the experienced for being too old. The biases we've convinced ourselves we don't have. In this episode, I get into the real cost of ageism and why it doesn't travel alone. I use a real-world leadership example that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with what happens when people finally feel heard. I share three hiring stories from my own corporate career that changed how I lead, and one of them still makes me smile and still stings at the same time. And I do something I don't always do publicly: I turn the mirror on myself. Because I can't talk about generational legacy and bias without examining what I've brought into the room. That would be the easy version of this conversation. And easy isn't what we do here. In this episode: * What it actually means to grow up Gen X — and why we raised our children so differently than we were raised * Why calling younger generations soft is a leadership failure, not an observation * The three hires HR didn't believe in — and why they became my highest-performing team * The moment my own bias showed up and what I did about it * Three codes for leading across generational lines without losing what makes each generation essential We are not meant to compete across generational lines. We are meant to complete each other. This one is for every leader, parent, grandparent, and builder who wants to leave something worth inheriting.
