On June 17th, the European Parliament voted 418 to 218 to allow the deportation of asylum seekers to detention centres outside the EU. Far-right MEPs chanted “send them back” in the chamber. That same evening, I had a conversation with a man that I have not been able to stop thinking about. This episode is about polarisation, but more precisely, about what we are actually calling polarisation and why I think we’ve been misdiagnosing it. It is about the system built to keep us frightened and divided, about the weaponisation of women’s rights to justify anti-immigration agendas, and about the exhaustion of being expected to educate the people who have decided you are the problem. It draws on Eurostat’s EU Gender-Based Violence Survey, Iris Marion Young’s political theory on structural responsibility, Oxfam’s 2026 wealth inequality report, Sara Farris’s work on femonationalism, and one conversation I genuinely could not finish. I don’t have clean answers. But I think I have the right questions.
