Winter storm continues across North Carolina and the southern Mid-Atlantic through this evening ... ...Record cold temperatures will settle south toward the Gulf Coast through the next couple of days while dangerously cold wind chills over the northern Plains into Friday... ...Another round of mountain snow and lower elevation rain moving into the Pacific Northwest today will spread into the northern and central Rockies Thursday into Friday... Moderate snowfall is ongoing this afternoon across North Carolina and the southern Mid-Atlantic and is expected to fall though Thursday morning for these regions, with accumulations of 6-10 inches of snow possible. Additionally,  areas of sleet/freezing rain are also expected just to the south of the swath of snowfall across the coastal plains of North Carolina this afternoon into early this evening. Travel will be difficult in icy areas and in areas of low visibility. Other winter weather concerns across the east include a chance for light snow showers Thursday across the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachians as an upper low moves across the area. Light snowfall accumulations have a low probability across these regions. Lake effect snowfall may also be ongoing, especially downwind of Lake Michigan for tomorrow. A cold front will sweep through Florida this afternoon and bring the chance of showers and thunderstorms. More importantly, Florida will join the millions of people experiencing this Arctic air outbreak. High temperatures will drop from the 70s and 80s to the 50s and 60s and low temperatures in the 30s as far south as Orlando by later this week. The rest of the country should be in the peak of the Arctic air outbreak. High temperatures will slowly modify by the end of the week, but will remain below average with temperatures in the teens, twenties, and thirties across the Plains, Midwest, and eastern U.S.. Wind chills will be hazardously cold. Temperatures will feel below zero in the southern Plains, and the northern Plains may feel as cold as -20 to -30 in the northern Plains for at least the next day or two with the influence of the Arctic high pressure. Be sure to dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside!  Another round of unsettled weather of rain and wind is approaching the Pacific Northwest as an area of low pressure and attendant cold front sweep southeastward. A period of moderate to locally heavy rain near the coast is ongoing today, and some heavy snow is expected across the Cascades and Northern Rockies Thursday. The cold front is progged to pass southward across the West toward the Four Corners region, but the front will be relatively weak and temperatures should remain around 5-10 degrees above average, as well as mostly dry, for the Southwest.

Coastal storm brings rain and snow showers to New England through New Year's Day... ...Long duration lake-effect snow event continues downwind of the Great Lakes... ...Periods of locally heavy coastal rains and higher elevation snow continue for much of the northwestern U.S.... ...Coverage of frigid Winter temperatures begins to expand from the Northern Plains into the Midwest... A coastal storm off of New England will continue to bring some light to moderate rain showers to the coast and accumulating snowfall to higher elevations of the interior through the remainder of New Year's Day. Winter weather-related Advisories and Warnings are in place as snowfall totals of 5-10 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts over a foot possible. Very blustery winds will also continue across much of the Northeast as a whole, and may lead to some blowing snow where snowfall is occurring. A favorable pattern for heavy lake-effect snow will also remain in place in the Great Lakes over the next few days, particularly downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Storm total snowfall of 2-4 feet will be possible for areas that see the most persistent lake-effect bands. Some more moderate accumulations will also be possible in Michigan downwind of Lakes Superior and Michigan. A quick moving system will lead to some light wintry precipitation for portions of the Midwest Thursday before bringing some more significant accumulating snowfall to the central Appalachians Friday as well.

Continued rounds of heavy rain and mountain snow for the Pacific Northwest... ...Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms return for eastern Texas into Louisiana on Thursday... ...Relatively mild conditions across the majority of the country through Friday... The very active storm track across the eastern Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest will continue to make weather headlines through the end of the week.  The next in a series of atmospheric river events is now ongoing across the Pacific Northwest, with moderate to heavy rainfall and a few thunderstorms continuing into Thursday morning.  This round will likely result in widespread 1 to 3 inch rainfall totals, and there may be some instances of flooding where rainfall rates are highest.  Once this first system moves inland, there will be a short-lived break Thursday afternoon before the next round arrives Thursday night for many of the same areas, bringing an additional 1-2 inches of rain by Friday morning.  Strong and potentially damaging winds are also expected near the coast and the coastal waters given a strong low level jet with these storm systems.  The Cascades and the Olympic Mountains will get hammered with heavy snow on the order of 1-3 feet, where winter storm warnings are in effect, and lighter snows heading south into northern California with winter weather advisories.  The higher terrain of the northern Intermountain West and the Northern Rockies will also get noteworthy snowfall as moisture from this storm system moves inland. Unsettled weather conditions are also expected for portions of the south-central U.S. going into Thursday, with an amplifying upper trough developing a new surface low and moisture plume from the western Gulf, heralding the development of scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms.  Both wind shear and instability parameters appear to become increasingly favorable for some severe weather on Thursday, and therefore the Storm Prediction Center has portions of the ArkLaTex region in a Slight Risk for severe storms.  Heavy rainfall could also be an issue where these storms train over the same areas, and there is a Slight Risk of flash flooding from eastern Texas to central Arkansas.  An axis of heavy rain is likely across portions of the Mid-South going into Friday as the storm system slowly moves eastward.

It will be a tale of two weather patterns for the country heading through the Christmas holiday, as portions of the West and south-central U.S. see a couple rounds of unsettled weather while most other locations remain dry. In the West, moderate to heavy lower elevation rain will remain possible with showers and thunderstorms in California though Christmas Eve as a Pacific system moves inland, with heavy higher elevation snow for the Sierra. Some isolated flooding will remain possible along upslope regions of the Sierra. The precipitation focus will spread inland over the Great Basin and northern/central Rockies through Christmas Eve night and into Christmas morning as the system continues eastward, with a mix of rain and snow for lower elevations and snow into the mountains. Any accumulations should light for lower elevations with a few inches possible in the mountains. Another Pacific system will approach the Pacific Northwest/northern California on Christmas day bringing another round of moderate to heavy lower elevation/coastal rain and heavy high elevation snow. Some isolated flooding will be possible along upslope regions of the coastal ranges, and Winter Storm Watches have been issued for the Cascades south through the Mt. Shasta region in California for snow totals of 1-2 feet through Thursday. The system will continue inland into the day Thursday bringing more lower elevation rain/snow and high elevation snow to the Great Basin and northern/central Rocky Mountains. Heavy snow totals of 4-8 inches, locally 12"+, are also expected through many ranges of the northern Great Basin/Rockies. Any accumulations at lower elevations should remain light. Strong, gusty winds will spread inland with the system and lead to blowing snow at higher elevations. To the east, showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast for portions of the south-central U.S. the next couple of days as a couple upper level waves/surface systems pass through the region. Showers and thunderstorms will continue through this evening over eastern Texas and into the ArkLaTex ahead of the first system. Some severe thunderstorms producing mainly hail and isolated damaging winds are possible, as well as some locally heavy downpours and isolated instances of flash flooding. This system will make little progress eastward and weaken Christmas day as a supporting upper-level wave departs the region, which fortunately means more scattered chances of storms into the Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley. Then, by early Thursday, another upper-level wave dropping southward will lead to lee cyclogenesis and a second frontal system pushing eastward into the southern Plains. Plentiful Gulf moisture lingering just along the coast will quickly return back northward over Texas/Oklahoma and into the Arklatex, leading to a renewed round of showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather will once again be possible with a Slight Risk (level 2/5) issued from the Storm Prediction Center for the threat of damaging winds as well as the potential for tornadoes. In addition, widespread storms producing locally heavy downpours will also once again bring the threat of some isolated flash flooding. Some more scattered showers and storms will be possible further northeastward into the Middle and Upper Mississippi Valleys as well.
