THE BELOVED APOSTLE WROTE THIS LETTER TO GOD’S PEOPLE FOR SEVERAL REASONS. * Knowledge of the doctrinal truth in John’s letter is a means which God uses to personally assure us of our salvation in an ongoing, enduring sense. III. IS THIS VERSE LAW OR GOSPEL? * The biblical doctrine of assurance requires and presupposes a proper law and gospel balance and distinction. * The 1689 London Baptist Confession (and most Reformed confessions) dedicates an entire chapter on the doctrine of assurance. IV.
