Through the Ages
Sir Joshua Reynolds' 1776 painting The Calling of Samuel portrays the biblical moment when young Samuel first hears God’s voice. Set in the time of the Judges, Samuel was dedicated to God by his mother, Hannah, and served under the priest Eli at Shiloh. One night, he heard his name called but mistook it for Eli’s voice. After three instances, Eli realized it was the Lord and instructed Samuel to respond, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” God then revealed a prophecy of judgment against Eli’s household. Reynolds masterfully captures Samuel’s innocence and divine calling through chiaroscuro lighting, symbolizing spiritual revelation. This work highlights Samuel’s pivotal role as a prophet and the renewal of Israel’s faith. -- If you enjoy our content, feel free to treat us to a cup of coffee. http://buymeacoffee.com/throughtheages -- Welcome to our YouTube channel! www.youtube.com/@ThroughtheAgesArt
