episode Early Diagnosis as a Determinant of Childhood Cancer Survival: Insights from the BENCHISTA Project cover

Description

The BENCHISTA – International  Benchmarking of Childhood Cancer Survival by Tumor stage – project is a worldwide collaboration led by University College London (UCL)  and Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan (INT) aiming to better understand the reasons behind international differences in paediatric cancer survival: the project highlights the importance of high-quality data collected through population-based cancer registries as the essential first step in encouraging healthcare systems to invest seriously in improving care for their populations. In this TJ Talks podcast – by Dr Laura Botta (Evaluative Epidemiology Unit at INT) – Professor Kathy Pritchard-Jones, Emeritus Professor of Paediatric Oncology at UCL and former President of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), explains how the BENCHISTA project is evolving and how the use of its data could contribute to further improvements in survival outcomes for children with cancer. Advanced Ovarian Cancer: Shaping Future Treatment Strategies

What emerges from the most recent first line trials is that the progress in advanced ovarian cancer depends not only on new treatment, but on the better patient selection: not all patients are in the same situation. And the most appropriate treatment must be determined for each individual: the best treatment for each patient. Within the complex clinical landscape of advanced ovarian cancer, the need for a multidisciplinary approach and ongoing clinical research — in both surgical and medical fields — makes it essential for these patients to be treated in specialist centres, where the necessary expertise and experience are available to decide the best treatment. Professor Domenica Lorusso, Director of the Gynaecological Oncology Unit at Humanitas Hospital San Pio X in Milan and a Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Humanitas University in Rozzano (Italy), hosts this TJ Talks, which explores future treatment strategies for the advanced ovarian cancer, with her skilled guests: Dr. Fabio Martinelli, expert in gynecological oncology surgery, and Dr. Elena Giudice, expert in gynecological medical oncology treatment, both from the Gynaecological Oncology Unit at Humanitas Hospital San Pio X. Outcomes that Matter: a Common Sense Revolution in Oncology

Caught between enthusiasm for technical innovation and the need for a critical assessment of research practices, the oncology is seeking a new path that offers real hope for effective treatments and a fair distribution of resources for the benefit of patients, because, as Prof. Gyawali’s elderly patient suggests, the real issue is that the quality of life depends entirely on the patient's perspective, which should not be ignored. Enjoy listening to this episode of TJ Talks: a passionate reflection on the therapeutic approach, the balance between the acceleration of innovation and what has been proven to work, and the urgent need for a common-sense revolution in oncology. Prof. Bishal Gyawali is medical oncology and professor at Queen's University, (Canada) and, together with Dr Dario Trapani (medical oncologist at the IEO, Milan, Italy) - who is hosting the podcast on this occasion - is one of the founders of the Common Sense Oncology Movement, launched in 2023.

Tackling the clinical challenges of GU Oncology

From advances in the screening of prostate cancer to the management of the genitourinary tumors, the GU oncology addresses ever more clinical challenges.  What are the most relevant challenges in the management of the prostate cancer population? "It is crucial to balance the right treatment strategy with the right endpoint for patients": Professor Silke Gillessen gets straight to the point of the question posed by Dr Giuseppe Procopio, Head of the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology Unit at IRCCS National Cancer Institute Milan, and Editor of the GU Section of the Tumori Journal. The guest expert of this TJ Talks podcast is Silke Gillessen, Medical and Scientific Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland and Full Professor at University of Italian Switzerland, focusing her research in genitourinary areas. In terms of endpoints - she continues - overall survival is the gold endpoint. But when it comes to metastatic prostate cancer, it is necessary to aim for a mix of quality of life, which is very important, and oncological outcomes. These should include improvements related to patients' quality of life, such as time to progression and time to symptomatic events. Patients remind us that we must think not only about the disease, but also about their well-being. Learn more about the genitourinary cancer care scenario from one of the leading voices in the field.
