Untranslated
Chatuni calls herself a feminist with a reading habit. She navigates between Singapore and Sri Lanka. Sinhala is her first core language, but she reads almost exclusively in English, even speaks English at home, with her family. Occasionally, when she meets another Sri Lankan abroad, she’ll switch to Sinhala. Writing it by hand feels unfamiliar. She hasn’t forgotten the letters, but the muscle memory isn’t quite there. She’s always chasing new authors, different voices, going down rabbit holes, searching. Now I ask her to do something simple, and not simple at all: to find a poem in Sinhala that’s never been translated. One she carries in memory.
