Description

Building a career as an independent filmmaker? Making the leap to longer and longer projects? Where do you even start? This week, we're sitting down with Jackie Nico to find out how she’s building a career for herself. She recently executive-produced, co-wrote, and starred in the award-winning pilot “The Ballad of the Bushmare” and is currently in pre-production on two feature films, “Margot My Name is Darkness” and “Golden: A Rumpelstiltskin Tale.” Add that to her comedy television pilot in post-production, “Divine Consign “ actively seeking distribution, and we feel like there’s a lot of knowledge Jackie can impart for our upcoming journey. We’re so excited to start our side quest interviewing filmmakers as we meet new folks along our own filmmaking journey. Stay tuned for more episodes like this one in the near future. Jackie Nico is an award-winning actor, writer, and producer who discovered her passion for the arts at eight years old. She refined her skills at The Second City Chicago and the Joel Hall Dance Center before studying Theater and Dance at Dean College. After relocating to Los Angeles, she landed her first professional role as a voice actor in Fred Claus within weeks. Her growing career features appearances in Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, HBO’s Entourage, and the pilot “Union 415,” along with a role in Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga - Chapters 2 and 3. Recently, Jackie executive produced, co-wrote, and starred in the award-winning pilot “The Ballad of the Bushmare.” Her versatility shines across gritty cinema and prestige TV, as she focuses on producing impactful stories that uplift marginalized voices. Currently, she is producing two feature films, “Margot My Name is Darkness” and “Golden: A Rumpelstiltskin Tale,” both in pre-production, alongside a comedy television pilot in post-production, “ Devine Consign “ actively seeking distribution. We're Making A Movie: Talking Editing with Alexander Jeffery

Editing a feature film is hard enough. Editing a movie musical? That feels like a whole different level of filmmaking wizardry. This week we're wrapping up our deep dive into post-production editing with Alexander Jeffery, Producer, Cinematographer, and Editor of one of our favorite indie films of the past year, Peeping Todd. We're going to ask about the unique challenges of editing a musical, how being your own cinematographer might have helped the process, how integral the planning process was, and if that prep work showed up in the editing bay. Join us as we pick Alexander's brain and continue our quest to learn everything we can about finishing a feature film . Alexander Jeffery hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, and is now based in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he co-owns the production company Bespoke Works LLC with his friend and longtime collaborator, Paul Petersen. After receiving a double major in Theatre Performance and Film & New Media from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2011, Alexander moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of acting and filmmaking. Quickly realizing Los Angeles wasn’t the right fit for him, Alexander moved back to the South to make low-budget, independent films with his friends. His first feature film, A Chance Encounter, was released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in the fall of 2022, both theatrically and on-demand, after winning the audience choice award at Heartland Film Festival in 2020. In 2015, his short film The Bespoke Tailoring of Mister Bellamy won the $50,000 Grand Prize at the Louisiana Film Prize. MTV called it “an acutely relevant, achingly human film.” Recently, his documentary The Power of Pickleball was released by Documentary+ and is on 7 airlines internationally. Alexander’s first venture into television, the indie TV pilot Fixation, premiered at SeriesFest in May 2026. We're Making A Movie: Post-Production Wild Card

Natalie is in Los Angeles this week as we gear up for our post-production crowdfunding campaign and film the Sneaky Pineapple Productions portion of our pitch video. So duh! This is the perfect excuse for a true Wild Card episode. We're checking in on where we are with Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse …We Think, how we’re doing since wrapping production, what’s keeping us up at night, what we’ve learned so far in post-production. Will we stay on topic? No way, not possible. Will there be filmmaking talk, questionable tangents, and probably a few stories we shouldn't tell? Almost certainly. We're Making A Movie: Editing Update

Our feature film, Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, has a first assembly. A first edit. A rough cut. For the first time, all the pieces of the puzzle are on the table and flipped over. The scenes are in order, the story exists, and we can finally start to see the movie we've spent years talking about. Which means it’s the perfect time to check back in with our Director and Editor, Mike Hayhurst. This is Mike's second feature film in the editing bay, and we're excited to talk about what he's learned since his first go-around, what surprises he’s had, and maybe even get a glimpse of what Turns Out might become as the edit continues to take shape. We're Making A Movie: Talking Editing with Brice Beckham

Editing a movie of any size is pure magic. Fight us on it. And nowhere is that magic more apparent than in the fine edit—the moment you stop assembling footage and start truly shaping the story. Performances change. Scenes evolve. Entire emotional arcs can appear out of thin air. It’s wild. To dig deeper into the process, we’re sitting down with industry veteran Brice Beckham. Brice has worn a lot of hats throughout his entertainment career, but this week we’re picking his editor brain. As we begin the post-production journey on Turns Out It’s the Apocalypse… We Think, we want to understand what really happens when a movie starts becoming THE movie. Brice Beckham has been in the entertainment industry for over 40 of his 50 years, gaining notoriety early in his role as Wesley on the ‘80s series Mr. Belvedere. Since moving behind the camera, he has written, produced, edited, designed, and animated for clients, brands, and networks such as Breaking Bad, Eric Clapton, Volvo, Audi, Subway, Kraft, VH1, AMC, IFC, and countless others.
