What is Linux?

What is Linux? Linux is the best known and most used open-source operating system. Unlike other operating systems, Linux has an open-source structure. This means that the user of the operating system can be aware of almost everything going on in the background of the computer, and can edit and improve the operating system. How is Linux different from other operating systems? It has very similar features with operating systems such as Linux, Windows, and macOS. Linux, which has a graphical interface just like other operating systems, also has various software such as word processors, photo, and video editor. Many daily applications also have versions adapted for the Linux operating system. In short, Linux will be ready where the computer is. One of the biggest features that distinguish Linux from other operating systems, as we mentioned in the first paragraphs, is that Linux is open-source. All the codes are written while making Linux are available to the public for free. This opens the door for these codes to be seen, changed, and developed by developers. Another difference between the Linux operating system is that there are various Linux distributions with different software options. This means Linux is incredibly customizable. This situation shows that not only applications but also other user interface components from systems that display graphics in Linux are interchangeable. So Linux offers you freedom for most things you can't do with other operating systems. Who uses Linux? Whether you know Linux or not, you have probably used Linux before, unintentionally. Almost a third of the websites are run by servers built by Linux. Apart from that, the Linux operating system is usually used by individuals and many large companies that are closely related to software. The reason why companies choose Linux when setting up their servers is that it is much more secure than other operating systems. Also, Linux is a more flexible and comfortable operating system compared to other operating systems. There is also an incredibly large community working to develop Linux. Companies can indeed receive enormous help from this community whenever they want. Some companies offer commercial support for the Linux operating system. What are the differences between Unix and Linux? You have heard of Unix. Unix, an operating system developed in Bell Labs with Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and a few others in the 1970s, has some similarities to Linux. Virtually indistinguishable when first developed, Linux has tools, programming tools, file system layouts, and other key components similar to Unix. The biggest reason Unix is different from Linux is that not all Unix versions are open source and free. Over the years many operating systems have been developed as Unix-like or Unix compatible, but none have been as successful as Linux. Linux has been the most successful and popular operating system ever built based on Unix. The fact that it is free and open-source also has a big effect on this. How was Linux developed? Linux was founded in 1999 by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki. Torvalds developed Linux because it rivaled another Unix clone Minix, which is mostly used in academic environments. Developed as a free and open-source alternative, the name of Linux would be Freax in the first step, but it was later decided on the name of Linux, which emerged from the combination of the developer's name and Unix. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Linux? Advantages 1) Security 2) Stable software updates 3) Customization 4) Different distributions Disadvantages 1) Technical support 2) No standard version 3) Learning time
