01. St. Servatius Bridge - Zicht op Maastricht

In 2005, the River Maas' west bank was entirely renewed. The embankment offers a good view of the St. Servatius Bridge, or 'Aw Brök' as it is called by the locals. The renewal work revealed the 13th century bridge's 'first arch', which now spans a footpath. This arch is basically all that remains of the medieval stone bridge.

02-A. Roman Maastricht - Hotel Derlon - Zicht op Maastricht

In 1983, Hotel Derlon, on the corner of Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and Plankstraat, was completely renovated. Remnants of a Roman temple complex were discovered in the ground. Due to the importance of the find, the building plans were altered: the hotel basement now houses a museum, where you can become acquainted with the city's earliest history.

02-B. Roman Maastricht - Thermae - Zicht op Maastricht

Near Stokstraat, remnants of a Roman bathhouse had been excavated. The outlines of these 'Thermae' are indicated in the paving of the little square above.

02-C. Roman Maastricht - Abutment St. Servatius Bridge - Zicht op Maastricht

The Romans built a bridge in Maastricht: the only permanent cross-river connection to the North Sea. This road junction turned out to be the ideal location for a port, for trade and for inns. A small abutment, built in 1984, marks the location of the Roman bridge.

03-A. St. Servatius Church - Church - Zicht op Maastricht

The church as it is now has been extended and adjusted several times, according to the taste of the time. The core consists of a large three-nave basilica, built on Saint Servatius' grave.
