Avoiding Babylon

Podcast af Avoiding Babylon Crew

Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity. As we see it, our job here at Avoiding Babylon is to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God’s Grace.  Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,There’s always laughter and good red wine.At least I’ve always found it so.Benedicamus Domino!”

Bug Hall, best known as Alfalfa from "The Little Rascals," takes us on his extraordinary journey from Hollywood sets to homesteading. Bug's story begins with an unexpected casting call that launched him into stardom at age 8. Over the next two decades, he appeared in approximately 100 film and TV productions, culminating in an Emmy nomination. But beneath the success lurked struggles with substance abuse starting as early as age 11. While many child stars' stories end in tragedy, Bug's took a remarkable turn when he encountered Catholicism through Father Ripperger, a renowned exorcist priest. The conversation delves into Bug's profound spiritual awakening and his controversial decision to "self-cancel" - walking away from Hollywood entirely after concluding the entertainment industry is fundamentally incompatible with his Catholic faith. "I fundamentally reject the idea that Catholics can change Hollywood from within," Bug explains. "The entire foundation of filmmaking is sodomitical." Most compelling is Bug's embrace of voluntary poverty as a path to freedom rather than deprivation. Living with minimal overhead expenses on a farm, building structures by hand, and raising his children in a lifestyle centered on prayer and simplicity, Bug challenges our modern assumptions about success and fulfillment. "Poverty only sucks if you're desperately trying to get out of it," he reflects. "When you embrace it, there's something psychologically freeing about letting go of the rat race." Now building a timber-frame stone house in Arkansas "designed to stand 500 years," Bug shares practical wisdom about sustainable living, the psychological benefits of direct stewardship over land, and the profound peace that comes from radical fidelity to conscience. His testimony offers a powerful alternative to our culture's relentless pursuit of more. Sponsored by Recusant Cellars, an unapologetically Catholic and pro-life winery from Washington state. [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/1987412/open_sms] Liturgical tensions within Catholicism take center stage as we dissect a revealing conversation between Matt Fradd and Voice of Reason about traditionalism, Vatican II, and ecclesiastical authority. The discussion begins with a startling proposition: what if content creators like Taylor Marshall were required to make a public profession of faith affirming Vatican II or face excommunication? This authoritarian fantasy reveals much about how certain Catholic voices view traditionalists—not as faithful Catholics seeking reverent worship, but as rebellious figures requiring discipline. What makes this conversation truly fascinating is its contradictions. Both commentators have sought refuge in Eastern rites to escape problematic Novus Ordo liturgies, yet criticize traditionalists for essentially doing the same thing. Even more remarkably, after insisting traditionalists must accept all post-conciliar reforms, they admit that certain changes—like turning the priest to face the people—were "clearly a mistake." This episode delves into why traditional Catholics feel their spiritual birthright was stolen and how this explains their frustration. We examine the reality of Latin Mass communities versus the stereotypes often portrayed in Catholic media, and why influential Catholic voices seem reluctant to engage directly with traditionalists. The heart of this discussion isn't about who's right or wrong, but about recognizing our shared Catholic identity beyond liturgical preferences. Whether you attend a Latin Mass, Byzantine liturgy, or reverent Novus Ordo, we're all seeking authentic worship that brings us closer to Christ. Could the solution to our divisions be as simple as honest conversation? Perhaps it's time for influential Catholic voices to stop talking about traditionalists and start talking with them. [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/1987412/open_sms] What happens when theological roads diverge? In this thought-provoking conversation, we're joined by Aidan Mattis from The Lore Lodge, whose spiritual journey has led him from non-denominational roots through Methodism and ultimately to Anglo-Catholicism - with a controversial detour through Freemasonry along the way. Our guest articulates why he believes Protestant churches inevitably "fall away" without apostolic succession, while sharing his hesitations about embracing Roman Catholicism fully. We dive deep into church history, examining how the Catholic Church's moral steadfastness on issues like contraception stands in stark contrast to other denominations that compromised during cultural shifts. The discussion tackles thorny historical questions about papal authority, the legitimacy of various ordinations, and whether multiple "branches" of Christianity can claim authentic apostolic lineage. Perhaps most fascinating is our exploration of Freemasonry's relationship with Christianity. Our guest defends his participation in what he describes as "regular" Freemasonry, distinguishing it from the "Oriental Lodges", while acknowledging the apparent tension this creates in his religious worldview. The conversation takes unexpected turns as we consider how theological understanding shapes our perception of current events, particularly regarding evangelical dispensationalism's influence on foreign policy toward Israel. Whether you're a devout Catholic, a curious Protestant, or simply interested in how religious identity forms in our modern world, this conversation offers valuable insights into the ongoing search for authentic faith. What theological positions are worth standing firm on? When does unity matter more than doctrinal purity? And how do we navigate a religious landscape fragmented by competing claims to truth and authority? Join us as we wrestle with these questions and more. [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/1987412/open_sms] The veil between geopolitics and spiritual warfare grows increasingly thin as Israel launches strikes against Iran, potentially drawing the United States into yet another Middle Eastern conflict. We explore how these events align with Father Maudsley's apocalyptic framework, suggesting the modern state of Israel represents "the kingdom of Satan getting its foothold in the world" and connecting to Revelation's prophecy of the beast that returns. Diving into cultural manipulation, we examine how Hollywood has programmed generations of women through films like Titanic and Forrest Gump, portraying characters who abandon stability for fleeting passion as heroines rather than cautionary tales. This programming has real consequences, reshaping relationship expectations and undermining family formation. The financial system itself becomes a theological question as we discuss usury in modern banking. With mortgage rates climbing above 6.5%, many Catholics find themselves trapped in economic servitude, unable to fully live out Church teachings while participating in modern economic life. We consider practical ways to resist these systems while building sustainable Catholic communities. Pope Leo XIII's cautious approach to Church governance raises questions about his intentions and future decisions. Will he merely maintain Francis's appointees like Cardinal Fernandez at the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith, or will he eventually bring back traditionalist voices like Cardinal Sarah and Cardinal Burke? Throughout these challenging times, strong parish communities remain essential. Whether Novus Ordo or Traditional Latin Mass, parishes that foster deep connections and authentic Catholic practice provide the stability needed to weather the approaching storms. [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/1987412/open_sms] The age-old question of how to handle crying babies at Mass sparks a deeper conversation about parenting, reverence, and the future of the Church. "If your Mass ain't crying, it's dying" captures an important truth about vibrant parishes, but where's the line between welcoming families and maintaining sacred worship? As Catholic fathers, we dive into the practical realities of bringing children to Mass—sharing our own struggles, successes, and the occasional parenting mishaps. We explore the profound difference between an infant's occasional cry and the entitled parenting that allows older children to disrupt Mass without intervention. The challenging truth is that parents have a responsibility not just to bring children to church, but to gradually teach them appropriate behavior in sacred spaces. From our personal experiences—taking restless four-year-olds to the narthex, teaching toddlers to recognize Jesus at the Consecration, and receiving both death glares and encouragement from fellow parishioners—we offer insights into this delicate balance. We acknowledge the special challenges of traveling families, single parents, and children with special needs, while emphasizing how even very young children can begin to understand the reverence due to the Eucharist. Beyond the baby debate, we tackle controversial topics including Eucharistic procession protests in Texas, the jaw-dropping story of someone willing to spend $17,000 on cat cancer treatments, and concerning trends in Catholic apologetics. We finish with hopeful signs of traditional Catholicism's resurgence among young Americans seeking substance and meaning in an increasingly rootless culture. Join us for this honest, sometimes humorous exploration of Catholic family life and the challenges of raising faithful children in today's world. En fantastisk app med et enormt stort udvalg af spændende podcasts. Podimo formår virkelig at lave godt indhold, der takler de lidt mere svære emner. At der så også er lydbøger oveni til en billig pris, gør at det er blevet min favorit app.
