Most people assume you need a university degree to work in marine conservation but that is NOT the case! In this second podcast I chat to Ruby Free, one of the most dedicated and passionate young conservationists working to protect our oceans. At 21, she has already volunteered and worked for tens of projects including working with seals and marine mammals, documenting whale species and running plastic pollution and citizen science cleans. Ruby is an advocate for people to use volunteering to gain the experience they need to start their careers in marine conservation and we talk about the route Ruby has taken that has now landed her her dream role starting soon on Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland. It is a real, fun and refreshing conversation - I hope you enjoy it!
Science can be dense...very dense, so how should it be communicated? For #internationalwomensday [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/internationalwomensday] on 8th March I have interviewed 4 amazing women, each working in different areas of marine conservation and education. They all have fascinating insights and stories about their work and their thoughts on ocean protection and I can't wait for you to watch/listen to our conversations! In my first episode I will be speaking to Sara Kulins, Marine Education and Outreach Manager for the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC), University of Auckland 2nd year student working towards a MSc in Marine Science and Founder of www.ispeakforthesea.com, a platform focussed on marine education. We talk about: - Sara's Journey - New Zealand life - Marine education - Event organisation - Diving & Surfing - Communicating Science - Marine Protected Areas - Study Advice - Role models As well as lots of different experiences and stories! Tune in if any of these topics tickle your fancy!
