episode Episode 17: Finishing up Tractate Rosh Hashana (R"H 4:8-9) cover

Episode 17: Finishing up Tractate Rosh Hashana (R"H 4:8-9)

Today’s mishnas finish our tractate with a discussion of what you cannot do to access a shofar on Yom Tov and then outline the order of the shofar blasts. You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.4.8?lang=bi].  I take the opportunity to thank many of the people who helped me get to this point. In the episode, I reference the JOFA UK podcast #YourTorah, which did an individual episode about each tractate. You can check out the Rosh Hashana episode here [https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yourtorah/id1297027145?i=1000398830550].  I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking. episode Episode 16: Tripling up (R"H 4:5-7) cover

Episode 16: Tripling up (R"H 4:5-7)

Today’s mishnas talk about the composition of the mussaf Amidah and the placement of Shofar blowing. You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.4.5?lang=bi]. You might also want to refer to the Rosh Hashana machzor itself, which can be found here [https://www.sefaria.org/Machzor_Rosh_Hashanah_Ashkenaz%2C_Musaf%2C_First_Day_of_Rosh_Hashana%2C_Amidah?lang=bi]. I continue my discussion of siyyums and when they are useful. (The source I reference talking about the fast of the firstborn is Aruch Hashulchan Orach Chayim 470:5 [https://www.sefaria.org/Arukh_HaShulchan%2C_Orach_Chaim.470.5?ven=hebrew%7CArukh_HaShulchan,_Orach_Chayim_--_Wikisource&lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en] .) I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking. Episode 15: Rabbinic Enactments with special guest Tzipporah Machlah Klapper (R"H 4:3-4)

Today’s mishnas continue our discussion of Rabban Yochanan Ben Zakkai’s rabbinic enactments. I am joined by Tzipporah Machlah Klapper to discuss them. You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.4.3?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en].  Content note: I often oversimplify concepts when I’m trying not to get too bogged down in secondary details. More accurately, the Biblical prohibition discussed is “carrying an object four cubits in a public domain.” I wrote “carrying outside an eruv” in the script, which is a modern analogue but not the exact same case and definitely imprecise. Different people feel differently about glossing over distinctions like these when talking to kids. I appreciate the grace of those who’d prefer precision. I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking. episode Episode 14: Siyum coming soon (R"H 4:1-2) cover

Episode 14: Siyum coming soon (R"H 4:1-2)

Today’s mishnas talk about blowing the shofar on Shabbat in the Temple, and how the rabbis created new traditions after the destruction of the Temple to keep this observance alive. You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.3.7?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en]. I also talk a bit about siyum planning. You’ll notice that I mention that siyums are useful twice a year - this episode talks about one, and episodes 16-17 will talk more about this topic so stay tuned!  I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking. episode Episode 13: A Literal Flaming Serpent? Rosh Hashana 3:7-8 cover

Episode 13: A Literal Flaming Serpent? Rosh Hashana 3:7-8

Today’s mishnas talk about intention when performing a mitzvah, and about the role of symbolic actions in two famous stories in the Torah. The mishna tells us three categories of people who cannot blow the shofar for others, which leads to a brief discussion of how to tackle exclusionary content. You can find these mishnas on Sefaria here [https://www.sefaria.org/Mishnah_Rosh_Hashanah.3.7?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en].  I use a lot of Hebrew terms when I'm talking.
