Four decades on the faded Polaroid picture still defies belief. Frozen forever within the white square frame, nine youths on their hands and knees stacked atop one another to create a playful pyramid. Their expressions range from slight amusement to outright glee. It was the Eighties in Chicago, Illinois when the Polaroid image was snapped. It appears as if it could’ve been taken at a birthday party, family reunion or holiday celebration. Only it wasn’t. It was taken minutes after a cold-blooded murder. Moments before, within the same walls, 40-year-old Nancy Knuckles was strangled to death by her 17-year-old daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend, while a houseful of their friends were present. When the rest of the group, including Nancy’s other daughter and son, discovered the scene, they didn’t alert authorities. Instead, they cracked beers, turned on music and went about their day. Over 40 years later, the case remains one of Chicagoland’s most hotly debated. The central question: who was Nancy Knuckles and did her own actions contribute to her brutal death? In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries, “Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing.” This documentary shows viewers the dark side of child influencers and what can go wrong when minors are pushed to produce content and income. Piper Rockelle’s YouTube channel, featuring her “squad,” was wildly successful and earning hundreds of thousands of dollars each month. Over time, members of the squad and their parents came to see Piper’s mother, Tiffany Smith, as problematic, exploitative and a master manipulator. Video footage in the documentary shows Tiffany exhibiting disturbing behavior toward the children, and even forcing herself onto one of the minor squad members. In 2022, 11 former squad members filed a lawsuit against Tiffany Smith and her much younger boyfriend, Hunter Hill. The plaintiffs alleged that Tiffany and Hunter sabotaged their YouTube channels, and claimed Tiffany abused them. Jami gets into all the details of this cringey and disturbing documentary, providing all of her personal hot takes along the way. In December 1989, 37-year-old Susan Simoni clocked out from her job as a medical secretary. A simple plan lay ahead: pick-up dog from the groomer and daughter from ballet. A fairly typical evening. Or so she thought. Outwardly, Susan had it all. But beneath the veneer of a perfect life, a hidden darkness lurked. Susan’s marriage of 15 years was falling apart. The previous night, Susan had finally broached the subject of divorce with her husband Brian. She’d even handed Brian a pamphlet, a guide to navigating the painful process with minimal damage to their three children—ages 14, 11, and 9. When Susan failed to pick up her daughter, Alicia, from ballet and never arrived home that night, Brian called police to report her absence. The next morning, Susan was found dead in her SUV. It didn’t take police long to identify a suspect, and his identity surprised everyone …everyone, that is, but those who knew Susan best. On November 2, 2016, Sherri Papini left her Redding, CA home to go on a jog. When Sherri didn’t return home, the mom of two was reported missing. Sherri Papini’s case became a media frenzy and suspicion fell on her husband, Keith Papini. Law enforcement and the public began to think Keith had something to do with his wife’s disappearance. Three weeks after Sherri went missing, she turned up again reporting that her captors had set her free. Sherri was visibly injured and seemingly traumatized by what her abductors had done to her. Then, it became apparent that Sherri had made the entire, bizarre story up. The media dubbed Sherri the real life “Gone Girl” as the shocking details of her kidnapping hoax unfolded. In this episode, Jami and Melissa recap the Hulu docuseries Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini and give their own takes on the case throughout.
