From the Tower of Babel to the golden calf incident, we see a pattern: when humans assemble for their own glory or purposes, it leads to confusion and rebellion. The people at Babel tried to build a tower to heaven to make a name for themselves, but God had to come down because their tower couldn't reach His majesty. The Israelites gathered to worship a golden calf, mixing their devotion with idolatry. These cautionary tales remind us that we are not simply a crowd looking for a cause. Instead, we are a people called by the King of Kings, responding to His gracious initiative. Psalm 2 beautifully captures this tension: while nations rage and plot against God, He sits in heaven, unmoved and sovereign. The psalm ends with a powerful invitation: blessed are all those who take refuge in Him. This is why we gather—not out of habit, not to make a name for ourselves, not to resist God's authority, but because He is worthy, because we need to hear His Word, because our gathering serves as a witness to the world, and because we come with both a warning and an invitation for those who don't yet know Him.
