About Analyzing American Revolution - AARevolution.net

AARevolution.net is not your basic U.S. History 101! We are not about chronicling the American Revolution, storytelling or mythologizing. In Analyzing American Revolution (AAR), professors analyze the American Revolution from many different angles in in-depth interviews with host, Adel Aali. AAR is a production of History Behind News (HbN), in which Adel has interviewed 197 professors (and counting) about U.S. and world history. And now Adel brings that experience to interview and analyze scholars of the American Revolution.

The Bizarre Plot That Armed the American Revolution | S1E19 AAR

Royal blackmail. A cross-dressing spy-decorated soldier diplomat. A ruined American patriot. A genius playwright, clockmaker. Spies. Secret arms deals. Before the Franco-American alliance became official, the American Revolution survived because of a desperate covert operation stretching from Philadelphia to Paris and London. A Connecticut shopkeeper with no diplomatic experience, a flamboyant French playwright, and one of the strangest figures in European history helped smuggle weapons to the colonies while British spies followed their every move. Their unbelievable personal stories did not merely surround the American Revolution — they helped shape its outcome. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways [https://analyzingamericanrevolution.com/revolutionary-era-blog/] 🚩About My Guest: Prof. Joel Richard Paul Joel Richard Paul is emeritus professor of international law at UC Law, San Francisco, where he teaches and writes about constitutional law, international business and trade, and foreign relations and national security law. "Indivisible: Daniel Webster and the Birth of American Nationalism", a book that we discussed in the History Behind News program, and 3. episode Was the American Revolution an Immigrant Revolution? | S1E18 AAR artwork

Was the American Revolution an Immigrant Revolution? | S1E18 AAR

Half the population in Revolutionary America was made up of immigrants and their descendants. Germans, Irish, enslaved Africans, indentured servants, and even foreign soldiers shaped the politics, land conflicts, and violence of the American Revolution. Colonists demanded more land, pushed into Native territories, and clashed with British imperial limits after 1763. This is the story of migration, loyalty, citizenship, expansion, and revolution in early America. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways [https://bit.ly/AAR-Home] 🚩About My 216th Guest Scholar: Dr. Aaron Fogleman Dr. Aaron Fogleman is a Distinguished Research Professor at Northern Illinois University. His work focuses on (1) the Atlantic World, (2) transatlantic migration, and (3) the intersection of religion and culture in early America. episode How Taverns Fueled the American Revolution | S1E17 AAR artwork

How Taverns Fueled the American Revolution | S1E17 AAR

Taverns were not just places to drink during the American Revolution. They were communication hubs, recruiting centers, political clubs, propaganda networks, and spaces where ordinary colonists transformed anger into rebellion. Long before independence, many colonists saw themselves as deeply British — until fights over taxation, liberty, and imperial power turned taverns into centers of resistance. In this conversation, we discuss rum punch, liberty poles, mob violence, class divisions, the Sons of Liberty, and why revolutionaries gathered in taverns before marching into the streets. We also examine the darker side of these spaces: slavery, exclusion, disorder, violence and revolutionary intimidation. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways [V] 🚩About My 214th Guest Scholar: Dr. Vaughn Scribner Dr. Vaughn Scribner is a professor of British American history at the University of Central Arkansas, where he teaches (1) British history, (2) Colonial & Revolutionary America, (3) the Enlightenment, (4) the Atlantic slave trade and (5) historical methods. His scholarship reflects his broad interests, as evident in the following works: —"Under Alien Skies: Environment, Suffering, and the Defeat of the British Military in Revolutionary America", a book that won The Society of the Cincinnati Prize; —"Merepeople: A Human History", a book about humanity's obsession with merfolk since ancient times; and —"Inn Civility: Urban Taverns and Early American Civil Society", which is the subject of this interview. The Dutch Dilemma: Supporting the American Revolution | S1E15 AAR

Money. Loans. Smuggled goods. War supplies. The American Revolution wasn’t just fought on battlefields—it was sustained through a shadow network most Americans never learned about. While Britain tried to crush the rebellion, Dutch merchants, financiers, and political factions quietly kept it alive—often in defiance of their own government’s neutrality. And when Britain finally struck back, that hidden support triggered a wider war that reshaped the outcome of the Revolution itself. 📄 Interview transcript & takeaways [https://analyzingamericanrevolution.com/the-dutch-dilemma-supporting-the-american-revolution/] 🚩About My 211th Guest: Dr. Peter Van Cleave Dr. Peter Van Cleave [https://search.asu.edu/profile/1027469#:~:text=Peter%20Van%20Cleave%20is%20Associate,M.A.%20History%2C%20Arizona%20State%20University] is a Clinical professor of History and Director of Online Programs of the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies in Arizona State University.
