Andrew on Everything
Increased societal prosperity can paradoxically lead to greater social isolation. As individuals become more financially self-sufficient, they have less need to rely on friends and neighbors for assistance with various tasks, from errands to larger projects. This reduced interdependence diminishes opportunities for social interaction and the strengthening of communal bonds, a trend potentially contributing to the disconnection observed in more affluent societies, as suggested by Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone." While acknowledging the advantages of prosperity, we suggest that society needs to develop new ways to foster social cohesion in an era of increased independence. https://andrewoneverything.medium.com/prosperity-contributes-to-societal-isolation-31dbe739640d
