About Booked on Sundays

It's a tale as old as time - Rachel, Ali, Jane, and Rachel all met in college, fell out of touch after graduating, and started a mini book club to stay in touch. Now, we want to invite all of you to join! Books can be a way to escape, to better understand each other, to laugh, and to cry your eyes out. We love to read, but we love to talk about what we're reading just as much. In each episode we'll talk through the entirety of a book (spoilers included!). We'll discuss our fave moments, hot takes, and ultimately, whether we'd read it again. We each have our own favorite genre and won't limit our picks to one in particular. We have so much fun talking about these books, we hope you enjoy it too!  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 37: Rebecca

Have you ever dreamed of being whisked away to an English mansion? How do you feel about rhododendrons? An older man? Societal expectations of the 1930s? Rebecca has it all! We're perhaps thrilled, perhaps just satisfied, and perhaps confused in our latest episode where we discuss Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Tune into book club with us as we dig into this unfortunate narrator, the dos and don'ts of maintaining a large house, and whether the movie is worth a watch. As a reminder, this season all our episodes contain Spoilers!! So if you haven't read it, and want to - turn back! Else, listen in and we will give you enough of a synopsis to get the picture. Have your own thoughts? Let us know (we dare you to)! Submit a footnote [https://bookedonsundays.notion.site/135f062e795d80c8963ed9566b05e390]! Rebecca book blurb: Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again... Working as a lady's companion, the heroine of Rebecca learns her place. Her future looks bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she meets Max de Winter, a handsome widower whose sudden proposal of marriage takes her by surprise. She accepts, but whisked from glamorous Monte Carlo to the ominous and brooding Manderley, the new Mrs de Winter finds Max a changed man. And the memory of his dead wife Rebecca is forever kept alive by the forbidding housekeeper, Mrs Danvers... Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the Other Woman. An international bestseller that has never gone out of print, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Tune in next month, where we will discuss Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. In the meantime, don't forget to book your Sundays! You Dreamed of Empires book blurb: One morning in 1519, conquistador Hernán Cortés entered the city of Tenochtitlan – today's Mexico City. Later that day, he would meet the emperor Moctezuma in a collision of two worlds, two empires, two languages, two possible futures. Cortés was accompanied by his nine captains, his troops, and his two translators: Friar Aguilar, a taciturn, former slave, and Malinalli, a strategic, former princess. Greeted at a ceremonial welcome meal by the steely princess Atotoxli, sister and wife of Moctezuma, the Spanish nearly bungle their entrance to the city. As they await their meeting with Moctezuma – who is at a political, spiritual, and physical crossroads, and relies on hallucinogens to get himself through the day and in quest for any kind of answer from the gods – the Spanish are ensconced in the labyrinthine palace. Soon, one of Cortés’s captains, Jazmín Caldera, overwhelmed by the grandeur of the city, begins to question the ease with which they were welcomed into the city, and wonders at the risks of getting out alive, much less conquering the empire. You Dreamed of Empires brings to life Tenochtitlan at its height, and reimagines its destiny. The incomparably original Alvaro Enrigue sets afire the moment of conquest and turns it into a moment of revolution, a restitutive, fantastical counter-attack, in a novel so electric and so unique that it feels like a dream. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Tune in next month, where we will discuss You Dreamed of Empires by Alvaro Enrigue. In the meantime, don't forget to book your Sundays! The Female Fantasy book blurb: All's fair in love and lore. Joonie is living in a fantasy—at least that’s what people tell her. Men in the real world have done nothing but disappoint her time and time again, so she keeps her heart reserved for Ryke, the fictional male lead of her favorite romance series, who just happens to be a merman. And so far, her book boyfriend is meeting her needs more than any other “real” man ever has. But when she learns that Ryke's character is based on a friend of the author, Joonie is determined to track him down and take her shot at a happily ever after. She’ll need to borrow her brother’s car for the road trip, with the one condition that his annoying (but also hot) best friend can catch a ride to New York with her. But as she makes her way to her male lead, she’ll learn that once you wish fantasy into reality, you have to take all the tropes that come with it—not just the fun ones. As unhinged as it is brilliant, Female Fantasy is both a self-aware dive into the concept of genre and a wild, steamy romp. Most of all, though, it’s a heartfelt love letter to romance readers everywhere. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. When Clara meets Israel Lee, a supernaturally enhanced jazz musician also vying for the ring, the two decide to work together. episode Episode 33: The Memory Police artwork

Episode 33: The Memory Police

The FULL EPISODE is here! It feels more than right to read a dystopian lit fic right now, given the state of the world. And this one is a doozy - we talk a lot about the fact we don't recommend reading this alone. There's a lot to unpack, and it reminds us that it's important to have friends close by to lean on for memories, insight into what the heck the author means, and in case you're feeling like abandoning your novel. We will talk about all that in more in our episode on The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa. Grab a warm beverage and take a listen. Have your own thoughts? Let us know! Submit a footnote [https://bookedonsundays.notion.site/135f062e795d80c8963ed9566b05e390]! That is a wrap on Season 3, thank you so much for reading with us and listening to our many many words! We will catch up with you next year for Season 4! In the meantime, don't forget to book your Sundays! The Memory Police book blurb: On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses—until things become much more serious. Most of the island's inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them, they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past. A surreal, provocative fable about the power of memory and the trauma of loss, The Memory Police is a stunning new work from one of the most exciting contemporary authors writing in any language. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast.
