About Culinary Garden

Sarah Evans & Alan Barbour, Master Gardener & Chef, are starting their twelfth growing season in the Culinary Garden. Listen weekly as they work through the growing season in a kitchen garden: planning, planting, harvesting, processing, and problem-solving. Offering experienced advice as they go from the garden to the kitchen, you will be inspired to cultivate your plate no matter what your level of garden experience.    Our Culinary Garden is located behind Ducks aren't Real restaurant, and the courtyard patio includes raised beds, pergolas, and a greenhouse, and uses organic methods and permaculture ideas to grow food every step of the way, from seed to salad. Downtown Sackville New Brunswick is in the middle of the Maritimes, in Canadian climatic zone 5b/6a, with a last frost date around May 15th. Hosted on Acast. Herb Gardening - planting, harvesting, and iced tea

June is a great time for herb gardening! Transplanting basil and seeding cilantro are on the list this week, as well as looking at a bed with some cilantro transplants that really lagged. Our greenhouse herb garden has been doing great, and many perennial herbs are ready to harvest. We harvest some lemon balm to dry and cut mint on a green roof, and make an iced tea. Watch or listen weekly as we work through the growing season in a kitchen garden: planning, planting, harvesting, processing, and problem-solving. Offering experienced advice as we go from the garden to the kitchen, you will be inspired to cultivate your plate no matter what your level of garden experience. episode Adjusting to Summer: Bolting, hardening off, & weeds artwork

Adjusting to Summer: Bolting, hardening off, & weeds

The transition from spring to summer is happening fast! Our rhubarb and greenhouse spinach are bolting, and although that signals an end to the spring harvest, we will prolong it a little longer because we haven't quite had our fill of rhubarb yet. Transplants that we carefully tended in the indoor growroom have been getting ready for the harsh spring environment, with a couple of casualties, and we talk about the hows and why's of a hardening off period. Finally, the weeds are growing faster in many cases than the crops we are trying to grow, and it can be frustrating. From annual weeds to invasive perennials, we talk about strategies for weeding as well as not getting discouraged (or worse, ignoring them). Listen this week as we embrace the hard parts, and look forward to a busy and delicious summer ahead.
