Intersectionality in Data- Diversifying Data Podcast #19

In this month’s episode of Diversifying Data we focus on Intersectionality in Data, featuring our host Rakhi Sharma and our guest Neeraj Goel Mittal, Global Head of Data, Analytics and AI at ViiV Healthcare. Too often we talk about women in data as if they and their experiences are all the same, when this simply is not true. While there may be echoes of similarity across the stories of women in data we must also acknowledge that the combination of factors that make each person unique also contributes not only to the way they see the world but their experiences in that world. Intersectionality is about understanding that the social categorisations that make up the who of who a person is cannot be treated in isolation, because they are interconnected. It recognises that individuals can experience multiple forms of oppression or privilege at the same time, and these factors intersect to shape their experiences and identities. Intersectionality impacts the way someone experiences and navigates the world and the barriers they face and how. During the podcast Neeraj openly speaks about her intersectional self and how intersectionality has affected her life at work. She also discusses the challenges she has faced as a result of this and how she has overcome them. Together Rakhi and Neeraj discuss the data in recent reports that provide an intersectional look at the specific biases and barriers faced by Asian, Black, Latina, and LGBTQ+ women and women with disabilities with the reports providing a clear indication that women at work are having different experiences based on intersectional characteristics. Lastly, they discuss whether we talk enough about intersectionality in our industry and in workplaces as well as what the risks of overlooking or ignoring intersectionality in the workplace can lead too. A huge thank you to Neeraj for taking part in this episode and for sharing his personal insights and experiences.

Diversifying Data Podcast #16 - Surviving Testicular Cancer

In this month’s episode of Diversifying Data, we celebrate and recognise the month of Movember, with the purpose of the month being to raise awareness around men's health issues, with a particular focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Ellen Hitchcock, Candidate Attraction & Engagement Associate speaks candidly with Bailey Harrison, Kubrick Alumni member about his own testicular cancer diagnosis and how catching diseases such as testicular cancer early is critical, yet stigma and lack of awareness can create barriers to screening and treatment. Together, Bailey and Ellen touch upon how men are less likely to get themselves checked if they feel something might not be right or talk openly about their concerns or struggles and how cultural stereotypes around masculinity and stigma surrounding mental illness for men can result in men not seeking help or support.   Bailey also speaks about the support he received, how his diagnosis impacted his mental health and the steps we can all take to support anyone that has received a similar diagnosis.  Lastly, Bailey offers useful advice to men who may have been diagnosed with testicular cancer or are worried they may be presenting symptoms.  Testicular cancer is the #1 cancer among young men, yet 62% of those who are most at risk don’t know how to check themselves. By starting open conversations and checking in on one another, it can start to break this cycle. A huge thank you to Bailey for taking part in this episode and for bravely sharing his personal experience.

Diversifying Data Podcast #15 - Celebrating Black History Month

In this month’s episode of Diversifying Data, our host Rakhi Sharma is joined by Client Acquisition Director Keisha Christie-Morgan and Data Product Consultant Alexander Benjamin to explore this year’s Black History Month theme, “Celebrating Our Sisters” which allows us to recognise and applaud the invaluable contributions of black women to society, to inspire and empower future generations.   Our guests share some of their personal experiences as a black person within the workplace at different stages within their career within the workplace, some of the misconceptions of stereotypes they faced along the way as well as some of the inspiring black woman in their life. Together, Rakhi, Keisha and Alex discuss support within the industry and why conversations around the topic within the workplace are so important as well as what steps organisations and senior leaders can take to have a positive impact on equity.   Lastly, they discuss active allyship and what senior leadership as well as the wider workforce can do to actively show up for the black community or any other minority community.   As Black History month draws to a close, it’s important to remember that diversity and inclusion are not simply goals to strive for, but also fundamental components of success.  A huge thank you to our guests for taking part in this episode and for sharing their personal insights and experiences.
