Title: The 10 Biggest Civil War Blunders Author: Edward H. Bonekemper III Narrator: Peter Berkrot Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 26 mins Language: English Release date: 01-22-18 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, American Publisher's Summary: What makes the Civil War so fascinating is that it presents an endless number of "what if" scenarios - moments when the outcome of the war (and therefore world history) hinged on a single small mistake or omission. In this audiobook, Civil War historian Edward Bonekemper highlights the 10 biggest Civil War blunders, focusing in on intimate moments of military indecision and inaction involving great generals like Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman as well as less effective generals such as George B. McClellan, Benjamin Butler, and Henry W. Halleck. Bonekemper shows how these 10 blunders significantly affected the outcome of the war, and explores how history might easily have been very different if these blunders were avoided.

Members Reviews: Missouri Girl After a visit to Alaska, I wanted to know more about the History of Alaska. When I saw this book, not only was it filled with History, but, there were tons of pictures to go along with the written History!! I couldn't rest with just one volume,,,I had to have all four volumes! On my second trip to Alaska, I attended the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska. As we were strolling down the many booths, I looked up and there she was,,,,,Laurel Downing Bill,,,,the author of my four Volume set!!! I was thrilled to death! I begged her to write a 5th Volume and she said it was a work in progress! I was thrilled to meet her and then met her again in Anchorage. We talked for a long time and have been friends ever since. If you love Alaska, then you need all 5 Volumes of this wonderful book! Brings Alaska's history to life! AUNT PHIL'S TRUNK, VOL. 1, by Phyllis Downing Carlson and Laurel Downing Bill, is a wonderfully written, eminently readable, and richly illustrated narrative of Alaska's history up to 1900. Ensuing volumes â including one expected to be released within the coming year â continue the story through the 20th century. I especially loved the wealth of vintage photographs in these pages that made frontier Alaska spring to life. So many cultures and so many characters populate this book: native tribes, Russian and American explorers and fortune hunters, trappers, prospectors, merchants, heroes, shamans, and scalawags. They are all here in their wild and woolly glory, pitting themselves against one of the most beautiful and forbidding landscapes in the world. In pre-1900 Alaska, fortune and disaster are never more than a hair's breadth apart. AUNT PHIL'S TRUNK is full of well-researched tales both wonderful and tragic. Written in a clear, coherent, and evocative voice, it is a fascinating window to Alaska's wild past. Highly recommended! Alaska History Just started reading, but so far, so good. I love history, especially about Alaska I love history, especially about Alaska, my home state. Quite a few historical pictures as well. Easy to read and informative. Interesting and amazing. I will be reading all the others soon Interesting and amazing. I will be reading all the others soon.

Members Reviews: but all the same it's an excellent and worthwhile and very short document to read The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln is 200 words long, in ten sentences, and is one of the masterpieces of American political speech in defending the universality of human rights and the legitimacy of republican government. It is also available for free for those who want to read it from time on their e-readers. Seriously, downloading this document should be a no-brainer. Students used to have to memorize this task, and it is one of those writings that deserves to be read and reflected on over and over again. Given its recognized greatness, I am aware that what I say about this document is entirely redundant, but all the same it's an excellent and worthwhile and very short document to read, and one that deserves its fame. 5 review Interesting take on Lincoln. For some contemporary views of Lincoln you'll also want to read the following 99-cent historic ebooks: 1The Real Lincoln: From the Testimony of His Contemporaries (1904) 2The suppressed Truth about the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (1922) 3The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House (1867) 4Personal Recollections of President Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Born and raised in Europe I only learned the highlights and about the speechâs historical significance. Reading the famous speech was a riveting experience. The following lines hit home: ââ It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us ... â Donât these words apply to so many other issues: the extinction of poverty, saving the environment, creating a stable peaceful environment for allâ and so much more? A must read for all! These lines will never lose significance! Gisela Hausmann, author & blogger American leadership at it's best! If asked what great Americans past or present I would like to meet, Abraham Lincoln would definitely be in the top 10. His eloquent words stir the mind and the soul. They not only acknowledge the terrible state of our country during the Civil War but also give hope about what our country could become. It's been said that he wrote the Gettysburg Address while suffering from scarlet fever, if so he did an amazing job of overcoming his own pain and suffering to bring hope to our nation. Great book Historically correct book Wonderfully read Great great great great Great great great great Lincoln was a great man great man

The Early Morning of War: Bull Run, 1861 (Campaigns and Commanders Series) Audiobook

Title: The Early Morning of War: Bull Run, 1861 (Campaigns and Commanders Series) Author: Edward G. Longacre Narrator: Aaron Killian Format: Unabridged Length: 22 hrs and 30 mins Language: English Release date: 12-27-17 Publisher: University Press Audiobooks Genres: History, American Publisher's Summary: When Union and Confederate forces squared off along Bull Run on July 21, 1861, the Federals expected this first major military campaign would bring an early end to the Civil War. But when Confederate troops launched a strong counterattack, both sides realized the war would be longer and costlier than anticipated. First Bull Run, or First Manassas, set the stage for four years of bloody conflict that forever changed the political, social, and economic fabric of the nation. It also introduced the commanders, tactics, and weaponry that would define the American way of war through the turn of the twentieth century. This crucial campaign receives its most complete and comprehensive treatment in Edward G. Longacres The Early Morning of War. A magisterial work by a veteran historian, The Early Morning of War blends narrative and analysis to convey the full scope of the campaign of First Bull Runits drama and suspense as well as its practical and tactical underpinnings and ramifications. Also woven throughout are biographical sketches detailing the backgrounds and personalities of the leading commanders and other actors in the unfolding conflict. Longacre has combed previously unpublished primary sources, including correspondence, diaries, and memoirs of more than four hundred participants and observers, from ranking commanders to common soldiers and civilians affected by the fighting. The book is published by University of Oklahoma Press. Edward Longacre has applied his considerable skills as a biographer to a vivid piece of American history, injecting humanity and fresh insight to the story of the Civil War's first major battle. (John Hennessy, author of Return to Bull Run) "Extensively researched and full of fresh insights and information offers a remarkably thorough, highly readable account" (Ethan S. Rafuse, author of McClellan's War) Members Reviews: As always Edward Longacre shows not only the depth of ... As always Edward Longacre shows not only the depth of his subject knowledge but his ability to convey this to the reader in an informative manner. Five Stars An astute historian and impeccable writer Four Stars Great book! Manassas Masterpiece For those of us following the War's 150th observances now enmeshed in the dire, dark days of 1864, a book on First Manassas lightens the load. Strange to say, as warriors step onto the Plains to begin their fateful march through four years of cataclysmic violence, this battle paints a scene almost fresh and innocent compared to what was to come. We encounter men in obscure positions whose names soon rise to martial immortality, while others' promising journeys forever end here. In contrast with battles later in the War, one is struck in this narrative by the pervasive sense of hope--for glory, for victory and, depending on which side, for union or independence. Of course, such impressions arise from safe Sesquicentennial musings; the bullets and shells of First Manassas surely wounded and killed as lethally as those of Cold Harbor or Fort Fisher or Ezra Church, and Edward Longacre turns a story that is anything but light. This book takes us through the military, political, public, and individual perspectives leading up to, emerging during, and following First Bull Run.
