What Do We Do Now?

This week’s sermon explores the significance of the biblical story of Jesus' "ascension into heaven"--his final departure from his followers after the resurrection. By exploring historical Christian art to illustrate the diverse ways humans have tried to visualize this mysterious transition, Pastor Eric invites us to find truth not in the specific or literal details of "how it happened/could have happened," but rather in the experience of what was happening: namely, that Jesus' departure represents a necessary evolution from depending on him, or simply looking to him for answers. It was time for them to rise up and carry forward the mission.By drawing parallels to personal life transitions and his own upcoming leave of absence, Pastor Eric helps us relate to the disciples' anxiety and need for answers in this moment. In the face of the anxiety caused by such life transitions, he encourages us to find stability not in simple answers nor in the status quo, but in maintaining core spiritual rhythms. True transformation only occurs, and always occurs when we stop seeking detailed maps of the future and instead commit to that which grounds and sustains us in authentic community amidst life changes.

Honor All the Women You Have Been

This week’s sermon from Pastor Eric is about the multidimensional reality of motherhood / womanhood / personhood, moving beyond shallow holiday ideals to acknowledge the visceral grief, joy, and political struggle inherent in the experience. Pastor Eric draws on the story of Mary, mother of Jesus, to challenge the traditional religious approaches to her—either ignoring her or turning her into a sanitized, passive icon. Both strip Mary of her humanity. By examining biblical narratives through a feminist theological lens, Pastor Eric helps us meet Mary as a complex, relatable woman who faced systemic violence and displacement, along with the typical stresses of parenting. As with women across time, motherhood is only one facet of her identity. As such, we are invited to celebrate the "thousand different women" an individual becomes throughout their life. Ultimately, this invitation is for all of us: to honor the full spectrum of one’s history and the evolving journey of human becoming.

What It Takes to Be "In Community" Sermon May 3

Pastor Eric’s sermon this week explores the meaning of true community. He examines the biblical tensions between the apostles Peter and Paul. While many of us desire the support of a "village," Eric argues that being a genuine villager requires embracing the inconvenience and conflict that arise from diversity. Using the early church's struggle to integrate Jewish and Gentile believers, the narrative highlights the danger of forcing newcomers to assimilate rather than allowing the community to be transformed by their presence. Pastor Eric draws parallels to modern "culture wars" and personal stories of belonging, emphasizing that avoiding discomfort often leads to segregation and loneliness. Ultimately, he calls for a commitment to repentance and repair, urging individuals to risk showing up as their full selves to foster a community grounded in expansive, boundary-crossing love.

"The Resurrection of All Creation" April 26

In this week’s sermon, Pastor Eric discusses the concept of resurrection and redemption as more than just a personal or human-centric event, but as a transformation of the entire physical world and its diverse life forms. Eric explores biblical narratives from the Old and New Testaments that envision a new heaven and a new earth—a vision born out of moments of deep communal trauma and environmental devastation. Pastor Eric points out that for figures like Jesus, Paul, Isaiah, and John, the hope for the future was not an escape from Earth but its utter restoration and renewal. He highlights that this transformation involves a change in our relationship with creation, from one of exploitation to one of kinship and interconnectedness.

Pooping in the Pulpit

Pastor Eric uses a humorous anecdote about his toddler’s comfort in the sanctuary, even to the extent of feeling safe enough to poop in the pulpit(!) to illustrate the profound nature of spiritual belonging. The church should be a space where individuals feel safe enough to release their tensions and vulnerabilities, mirroring the transformative experiences of encountering the risen Christ. Through this story, Pastor Eric reflects on the risen Christ appearing to two disciples on the Road to Emmaus to emphasize that resurrection is more than a logical, intellectual exercise; it is a tangible, life-raising power found in acts of hospitality and communal care. The life-raising power of God, "resurrection," is experienced through a supportive community that welcomes strangers and embraces their disruptions. The "risen body of Christ" is made real when diverse people find healing, joy, and authentic connection within a sacred space.
