Original Post Date: August 9, 2024 === Gospel Matthew 16:24-28 Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay each according to his conduct. Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” Reflection Nothing seems clearer in the teaching of Jesus, that we have to become people that are others centered, not self-centered. It's so easy for us to have it without even realizing it, that we focus everything on what's happening to me and how am I feeling it? What is fair and what is unfair? And all Jesus is saying is, look. Let go of that. Focus on self and focus on me. Focus on me and what I've done, what I'm doing. The example I have and you'll find life. Closing Prayer Father, your gift to us is your transforming grace. And one of the signs that it works within us, is that we see ourselves focused less and less on our wants, our needs, and focused on the things that people need around us. PRI Reflections on Scripture | Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord - Cycle B

Original Post Date: August 6, 2024 === Gospel  Mark 9:2-10 Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,  and his clothes became dazzling white,  such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.  Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,  and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,  “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents:  one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;  from the cloud came a voice,  “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves,  questioning what rising from the dead meant. Reflection What is interesting to me in this passage is the cloud. The disciples are going through an experience that is terrifying and confusing and wonderful all at the same time. But it's like this cloud that came over them. The voice of God, it's like stop trying to analyze each of these parts. Just enter into a place of listening to what I'm trying to do for you and what God is doing for you. He's coming to you in the flesh. And so the cloud is a symbol for all of us to understand that when we enter into the full mystery of what the scriptures are saying, we are encountering God who longs, longs to be a part of our life. Closing Prayer Father, help us to acknowledge the desire, the will, the intention that you have for us. You long for us to see the light, life, the truth. Original Post Date: August 7, 2024 === Gospel Matthew 15:21-28 At that time Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did him homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that hour. Reflection We will always deal with a kind of self-centredness that creeps into our conversation, into what we're doing or saying, and sometimes we find ourselves criticizing without even reflecting. And we know that that is normal. We are always both fully human and also infused with divinity. And one does not override the other. Closing Prayer Father, give us patience as you work to transform us into who you call us to be. We will always find ourselves slipping backwards, being less than we should be, but don't let that discourage us. Give us confidence in the direction you're calling us to live. PRI Reflections on Scripture | Tuesday of the 18th Week in Ordinary Time

Original Post Date: August 5, 2025 === Gospel  Matthew 14:22-36 Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side of the sea, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” After making the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret. When the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought to him all those who were sick and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak, and as many as touched it were healed. Reflection I want to focus on Peter. He has a reputation of acting before he thinks things out. Sounds familiar to me. And one of the things I see in this story is the necessity of belief, the necessity to be convinced, when you’re engaged in something that is not of your own doing. When you're used by a God who says, I want you to be the instrument of me to the world, and you find yourself in a place where you're not in charge. It's easy to be afraid. That's exactly what we see in Peter. He says, let me do what you ask me to do. And when he's doing it, he doesn't realize that he's not fully convinced that it will work, and he's afraid. And it again shows that when fear is there, it's often because we don't believe enough. All week long, we're listening to Jesus remind his disciples, you have to believe. You have to have a faith that is unshakable. Closing Prayer Father, when we experience a new world, a world of you working through us, it feels almost as if we're doing the impossible. And when we think it is impossible, that's when we fail, so bless us with conviction and faith. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.  Learn more about your ad choices. Original Post Date: August 5, 2024 === Gospel Matthew 14:13-21 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, "This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves." He said to them, "There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves." But they said to him, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have here." Then he said, "Bring them here to me," and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over– twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. Reflection We see in this gospel an aspect of Jesus. It is so attractive. He just learned of the death of his cousin. He wants to go to a private place and then instead, when he gets there, it's not private. All these people are there, and the first thing he thinks about is their needs, not his need. So he's moved to cure them. But then he uses this moment, I think, in a very powerful way, to teach us all about how his ministry is going to be continued in us. We are all disciples. We are all called to feed and nurture one another. And what is so interesting about this is the thing that we want to have. The the love that we need to have for one another is going to be a gift to us. He will empower us to love. He will empower us to serve. And everyone will be satisfied. Closing Prayer Father, awaken us to the power that you have shared with us. We tend to turn to ourselves and ask ourselves to produce the things that we need. You are there for that purpose.
