5 Minute Volcano #6: Milna, Russia

This week's 5 Minute Volcano is Milna in the Kuril Islands of Russia. This remote volcano in the Kuril Islands is a series of lava domes that have filled in the collapse crater of an ancestral volcano on Simushir Island. 5 Minute Volcano #5: Llullaillaco, Chile/Argentina

This week's 5 Minute Volcano is Llullaillaco, straddling the Chilean/Argentine border. It is the tallest historically active volcano on Earth, last erupting in 1877. It is also the home of the "Children of Llullaillaco", three sacrificed Incans remarkably well preserved by the arid cold of the high Andes. Here are some links to information about Llullaillaco: * The Global Volcanism Program page [https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=355110] on the volcano. * Two NASA Earth Observatory posts, one on Llullaillaco itself [https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/144453/llullaillaco-volcano] and one with a wider view of the Parque Nacional Llullaillaco [https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/72520/parque-nacional-llullaillaco]. * A close up view (well, from space) of the youthful dacite lava flows [https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/llullaillaco-volcano/] on the flanks of the volcano. * An article looking at the Incan mummies [https://www.penn.museum/sites/expedition/frozen-mummies-of-the-andes/] found on the volcano. * A PDF of the 2001 article [https://ia600108.us.archive.org/view_archive.php?archive=/24/items/wikipedia-scholarly-sources-corpus/10.1016%252Fs0306-4522%252897%252900055-9.zip&file=10.1016%252FS0377-0273%252800%252900245-6.pdf] from the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research by Richards and Villeneuve on Llallaillaco. 5 Minute Volcano #4, Terpuk, Russia

This week's 5 Minute Volcano takes us to the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. Terpuk is a remote shield volcano that captures some of the odd magmatic and tectonic processes happening way up in the northern end of the peninsula.  Some sources for this episode: * The Global Volcanism Program's page on Terpuk [https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=300512]. * A short paper [https://link.springer.com/article/10.1134/S1028334X06060109] on the timing of volcanism in northern Kamchatka by M.M. episode 5 Minute Volcano #3: Terceira, Portugal artwork

5 Minute Volcano #3: Terceira, Portugal

This week's 5 Minute Volcano heads to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean as I explore Terceira in the Azores. Although in some ways, the Azores (and Terceira) are like Hawai'i, they are also quite different thanks to the complicated tectonic setting that combines a hotspot, a divergent boundary and a triple junction where three plates meet. Some sources for this week's episode: * Global Volcanism Program page for Terceira [https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=382050]. * Earth Magazine look at the Azores [https://www.earthmagazine.org/article/travels-geology-mid-ocean-volcanic-excursion-calderas-and-caldeiras-azores]. * Volcano World: Tectonics of the Azores. 5 Minute Volcano #2: Karisimbi, Rwanda/DRC

This week's episode of 5 Minute Volcano heads to central Africa to look at one of the largest volcanoes in the East African Rift. Karisimbi is next door to more famous volcanoes like Nyiragongo, but even if it might have have erupted in thousands of years, it has still produced deadly volcanic hazards. However, it might also be the source of green energy for Rwanda and the region. And yes, still not 5 minutes.  Some sources for this week's episode: * GVP page for Karisimbi [https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=223040] * 2010's deadly lahars at Karisimbi [https://www.virunga-volcanoes.org/current-activity/activity-reports/2010-kibiriga-mudflow/]. * Assessment for the geothermal potential [https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Jean-N-Namugize-2/publication/277328473_PRELIMINARY_ENVIRONMENTAL_IMPACT_ASSESSMENT_OF_GEOTHERMAL_EXPLORATION_AND_DEVELOPMENT_IN_KARISIMBI_RWANDA/links/556860cc08aec22683015366/PRELIMINARY-ENVIRONMENTAL-IMPACT-ASSESSMENT-OF-GEOTHERMAL-EXPLORATION-AND-DEVELOPMENT-IN-KARISIMBI-RWANDA.pdf] at Karisimbi.
