About Games 105

Games 105 is an analysis podcast where four college students get together and talk about some of our favorite games. As students studying English literature, the humanities, narrative writing, and computer development, we have a weird blend of knowledge that makes us a unique bunch to talk about video games, not only as entertainment, but as folklore for the modern age. Some of the elements we want to focus on is the narrative and plot itself, the musical folklore, the environmental storytelling, the player experience, and the impact the games have on our culture.

Gaming Music

Join Abi, Tori, Brogen, and Rowen as they discuss the intricate interweavings of technology, music, and culture within videogames. They’ll take you on a wild ride through Hyrule Warriors, Pokemon, Dredge, and Warframe (gosh Rowen, pick a different game), and discuss ideas such as how culture influences our perception of music, how technology affects the music we are able to create, among other things. This one’s a fun one.

Development Lore

Coming back from an extended hiatus with the penultimate episode of Games 105, season 1! Sorry for the wait guys, but this one’s a fun one. Abi, Brogen, Rowen, and Tori have each chosen a game to discuss this time around, but rather than focusing on the story of the game, we’re going to take a look at how games are created, what economic, social, and developmental pitfalls can get in the way, and what that says about what we as gamers value in the games we play.

It would be impossible to sum up the entire lore of a centuries-old myth in just an hour, but by golly, Rowen, Brogen, Tori, and Abi will try. Even though the myths persist over time, they keep changing. Why is that? Why do we hold on to some aspects of the myth and let go of others? What does the way that we tell stories say about our culture? Join us as we try to answer at least a few of these questions.

How does a video game reflect on the cultural history of its creator? We continue last episode’s theme by contrasting Elden Ring’s darker visuals with the brighter tones of Breath of the Wild, and reflecting on how that affects the gravity of the two stories.
