About Getting used to it, Midlife

Getting Used to It, Midlife is a show hosted by two executive life coaches, Beth & Suzee, who are also expert friends and are both getting used to midlife. From empty nesting and aging parents to painful sex, and let’s not forget the extra lubrication, we will sift through all of it, speaking our truth faithfully and vulnerably. Listen as we live through this in ourselves and our relationships in real time and tease through the “how to” of this next phase of life. As coaches, we have the tools, but as women in the middle, we may not have all the answers. Scratch that— we’ll have some damn good ideas, too. Join us, and let’s get used to it together!

Getting Used To It: Grieving The Loss Of Your Unwritten History

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2271281/fan_mail/new] The hardest part of losing family isn’t always the obvious grief. Sometimes it’s the identity shock: waking up to the fact that there’s no one left above you, no living witness who can say, “Here’s who you were,” or “That’s not how it happened.” Beth joins us for a candid, often darkly funny, deeply human talk about what it means to become the oldest woman in your family and how that realization can make you feel strangely alone, even when your life is full. Getting used To It: The Thought You Felt Guilty For Having

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2271281/fan_mail/new] "Not fair. I want that too." That's the first honest reaction we had reading Molly Roden Winter's writing about her open marriage — and it sent us somewhere way deeper than gossip. Because the real spark isn't who dates whom. It's the shock of watching someone actually pause, ask herself what she wanted, and make a conscious choice about her relationship instead of just... following the default script. In this episode, we get into mononormativity — the cultural gravity that makes monogamy feel like the only civilized option — and why so many of us were conditioned to believe that even wondering makes us the bad guy. We dig into the research on relationship and sexual satisfaction across monogamy, ethical nonmonogamy, and open relationships (including why the findings are genuinely mixed, and why "what matches your values" will always matter more than picking the supposedly correct structure). Then we go to the messy, human middle: jealousy, the fear of not being enough, and the identity earthquake that hits a long-term marriage when one person starts asking who they are beyond wife and mom. We also wrestle with rules like "don't fall in love" — and what it actually takes for any partnership to hold up under real honesty, real communication, and real emotional elasticity. If you've ever felt guilty for a thought you didn't even choose — you're not alone. Listen, send this to the friend who will actually talk about it with you, and leave us a review. Then tell us: what's your gut reaction to open marriage or polyamory, and where do you think it comes from? Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Getting Used To It! Getting Used To It: How Was Your Day?" — The Simple Question That Reveals Everything Men and Women Get Wrong About Each Other

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2271281/fan_mail/new] Nobody in your house asked how you were doing today. Or yesterday. Sound familiar? In this episode, Beth and Suzee unpack why loving couples — especially men and women in midlife — still talk past each other. They dig into the "connect vs. report" communication gap, the secret relationship point system where one partner banks 40 points for a big trip while the other gives 40 for a simple "How was your day?" — and why jumping straight to fix-it mode can feel like care to one person and total abandonment to the other. If you've ever felt invisible — or just plain annoyed — in your own home, this one's for you. Subscribe, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a review so more people can find us. Getting Used To It: Your Social Life Was Partly Borrowed (The Friendship Grief Nobody Talks About)

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2271281/fan_mail/new] Nobody had a fight. Nobody did anything wrong. But somewhere in your 50s you looked up and realized the social life you thought you had was partly built on borrowed structure. The school run, the office, the neighborhood, the kids' activities. When the structure changed, the people went with it — and there's no ritual for that. No funeral, no casserole, nothing. Just a quiet thinning that you're somehow supposed to figure out on your own. Suzee and Beth get into why friendship grief is real even when nobody died, why making friends at 50 is harder than it was at 22, and why — if you're sitting there wondering who your people actually are — that's not a you problem. That's just what happens when the scaffolding falls away. Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Getting Used To It!
