Pew Research has been mapping American political identity since 1987, and their 2026 typology finds nine distinct voter groups — not two. The loudest voices in US politics come from just 38% of the country, split between the far right and far left, while the majority sits somewhere messier and more complicated in the middle. Host Neeta Bidwai reflects ahead of America’s 250th anniversary and walks through the 9 political typologies, based on a survey of more than 10,000 Americans, including issues like same-sex marriage, open carry, climate change, regulation, and church-state separation.
