The Monthly Project series allows participants to follow a single compositional prompt as a shared class project. For this month's project we are thrilled to have guitarist, composer, improviser, and educator Wendy Eisenberg. Buy Wendy's new self-titled LP from Joyful Noise Records here [https://wendyeisenberg.bandcamp.com/album/wendy-eisenberg].
The compositional prompt reads as follows:
We are continuing with our back-to-basics compositional prompts as a response to DAW bloat and fatigue.
Compositional intent cannot be rooted solely in the tech, even in electronic music. The art requires deliberate choices at the fundamental level. For a simple song structure, these fundamentals must include an equal emphasis arrangement of both melody and harmony.
For this month’s project you are to tap in to this bread and butter combo and keep it simple. Write a song in which you deliberately maintain a relationship between both melody and harmony. This should be expressed through a single monophonic instrument for melody and a single polyphonic instrument for melody. There are no genre or instrument type constraints for this prompt so as long as it includes this fundamental pair.
We are thrilled to have composer, guitarist, and educator Wendy Eisenberg as our guest facilitator for this project, fresh from their self-titled release of truly deliberate songs that pull no punches and still maintain this fundamental and simple pairing of bread and butter at its core.
