In both the garden and fatherhood, meaningful growth comes from patience, clarity, and hope, not comparison or panic. New seed catalogues. A fresh year ahead. Instead of turning this into pressure, I talk about appreciating the opportunity to plan without demanding instant results from ourselves. Inner peace & positivity This section focuses on calm dreaming. Letting January be a space for gentle optimism rather than frantic goal-setting. Just like gardeners sketch ideas before planting, we can hold plans lightly and allow them to evolve. Healing & letting go Looking ahead also means choosing what not to carry forward. Here, I reflect on letting go of last year’s mistakes and unrealistic expectations, whether in the garden or as a parent, and committing to kinder, more realistic standards. Relationships & connections Planning doesn’t have to be a solo task. This part looks at involving children in garden ideas, family conversations about the year ahead, and how shared plans can strengthen connection and excitement rather than create pressure. Mindset & self-awareness Comparison is one of the quickest ways to rush growth. I explore choosing intentional progress over measuring yourself against others. Your garden, your family, your pace, and learning to trust that path. Future self & growth Finally, we visualise the future. Who you want to be by spring, not in big dramatic leaps, but through small, consistent actions. The kind that future you will look back on with gratitude. Weathering the Cold

Just like the garden, winter reveals what’s resilient, what needs protecting, and where extra care is required. Self-love & gratitude We begin with gratitude for warmth, shelter, and safety, things that are easy to overlook until we really need them. In the garden, protection can mean fleece, mulch, or moving plants out of harm’s way. At home, it raises a deeper question: what does providing protection truly mean as a dad, emotionally as well as physically? Inner peace & positivity Winter is uncomfortable, and that’s okay. This section explores accepting discomfort without trying to fix it straight away. Finding peace doesn’t always mean feeling good, sometimes it means allowing things to feel hard without adding pressure or judgement. Healing & letting go Frost damage happens, even in well-tended gardens. I talk openly about mistakes, harsh words, and moments I wish I could take back, and how forgiveness, of ourselves and others, plays a vital role in healing and moving forward. Relationships & connections In the garden, we wrap plants to protect them. In family life, we do the same in quieter ways. Small acts of care, checking in, listening, being present. This part focuses on staying emotionally available, especially when things feel heavy or strained. Mindset & self-awareness Short days, tiredness, and pressure can change how we respond to situations. This section looks at recognising winter triggers, understanding why patience feels thinner, and how awareness helps us respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally. Jobs that don’t look impressive but make all the difference. I draw parallels with parenting, the emotional labour, the patience, the listening, the steady presence that often goes unacknowledged. You don’t see instant results in the garden, and that can feel uncomfortable. No demands. Just stillness. I reflect on how January at home can mirror this, slower mornings, fewer expectations, and how peace often arrives when we stop forcing progress. Healing & letting go Winter is a time for clearing out dead growth. Pruning plants, but also pruning unrealistic expectations of ourselves. In this introduction episode, I’m your host Lee Connelly, also known as The Children’s Gardening Coach. I share who I am, why I’ve created the Growing Dad podcast, and what you can expect from the show over the coming year. We talk through the structure of the podcast, the themes we’ll explore, and why now felt like the right time to start this conversation. This episode focuses on patience. Patience in the garden, where nothing grows overnight. Patience in being a dad, learning as you go and realising you do not have all the answers. And patience in my own career, which has spanned over 13 years of building projects, supporting children and families, facing setbacks, and trusting the process. We also touch on men’s mental health and the quiet pressures that come with fatherhood, creativity, and running your own path. This episode is not about having everything figured out. It is about slowing down, reflecting, and opening up honest conversations from the very start.
