The guidance published today by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control - ECDC provides advice for public health professionals in the EU/EEA managing individuals potentially exposed to Andes hantavirus from the M/V Hondius, and for 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 and 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 involved in the 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻: • contact classification based on level of exposure, • identification, management and monitoring of contacts, including testing, • infection prevention and control measures, • risk communication and management of misinformation. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 Passengers with symptoms should be prioritised for medical assessment and testing upon arrival. Depending on their condition and operational decisions, they may isolate in Tenerife or be medically evacuated for medical isolation in their home country. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 Passengers without symptoms are currently considered high-risk contacts as a precautionary measure and will be repatriated using specially arranged transport rather than regular commercial flights. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 ECDC recommends transmission-based precautions for responders and healthcare professionals, including gloves, gowns, respirators (FFP2) and eye protection during medical interactions. Medical masks, ventilation, cleaning and disinfection are also recommended.
