What is the teaching of Lashon Hara? Many Jewish teachings emphasize avoiding negative speech about others. Lashon hara is said to harm three people at the same time: the one who says it, the one who hears it, and the one who’s being talked about. The opposite of lashon hara is lashon hatov, or good speech. Is Lashon Hara biblical? The Torah contains a general injunction against rekhilut (gossip): “Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:16) Is Lashon Hara a sin? Lashon hara is considered to be a very serious sin in the Jewish tradition. The communicator of lashon hara (which is included in rechilut) violates the Torah prohibition of lo telech rachil b’ameicha, translating to “thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people”
