Holden's enemies and friends follow him to the strange place where the alien subway deposited him. Then they all shoot it out, mostly with each other, but eventually the right people get shot. Then Elvi teams up with Miller, and with her brains and his giant alien carapace, they manage to reach the incomprehensible thing they've all been seeking. Elvi figures out why Holden is immune to the proto-algic eyeball invader: his cancer meds. Turns out getting thoroughly irradiated is not without some long-term benefit. Meanwhile the Rocinante's rescue mission of the Barbapiccola is derailed by a nihilistic attack by the inner space militia. Very not cool.
