Locally Sourced
In this episode of Patriot Profiles, Mayor Tony Perry turns our focus to Patriot John Burrowes, Sr., the brother of Edward Burrowes and one of the most influential Revolutionary figures in Middletown. A wealthy grain merchant known as the “Corn King,” John operated mills and shipping out of Matawan Creek and used his property to support the American cause — supplying provisions to the Continental Army and allowing local militia to train on his land. Targeted by Loyalist forces and even taken prisoner during the war, Burrowes remained committed to independence. Discover the story of a Middletown patriot whose business, land, and leadership helped sustain the fight for our nation’s freedom.
