Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2459772/fan_mail/new] The word microbiome is everywhere now. But the science behind it goes back much further than most people realize, all the way to a Ukrainian soil scientist in the late 19th century and a Nobel laureate who promoted yogurt as a longevity tool long before we had a word for probiotics. In this episode, I explore dysbiosis, the disruption of the microbial community living with your skin, which was officially added to the twelve hallmarks of aging in 2024. I begin with the historical roots of microbiome science, from Sergei Winogradsky's soil ecosystems to Élie Metchnikoff's revolutionary ideas about gut bacteria and aging, and trace the path to the Human Microbiome Project launched in 2007 that mapped the microbial life of the entire human body. I explain what a healthy skin microbiome actually looks like, why it follows what I call the Anna Karenina law, and how age-related dysbiosis shifts the microbial community from protective to pro-inflammatory. I also cover the gut-skin-brain microbiome axis, the phenomenon of leaky gut, and what both mean for visible skin aging. And finally, the practical strategy: how nutrition, lifestyle, and the right topical ingredients (prebiotics, probiotics, biofermented extracts, and the new generation of agebiotics) can restore microbial balance and actively support skin longevity.
