Episode 2: Who Speaks for You?

In this episode of MedicAlert: Moments that Matter, host Annie Pittman shifts the focus from why medical information matters to what actually happens in the moments its needed most. When an emergency unfolds, there's often no time for length explanations or detailed histories. Triple 000 are called, paramedics arrive, assessments begin within seconds and critical decisions are made- sometimes with very little information to guide them. While many of us assume that our phone, the people around us, or the system itself will fill in the gaps, the reality can be very different. So, what really happens in those first few minutes? How does access, or lack of access, to medical information impact the care someone receives? To investigate further Annie is joined by Dr Alan McLean, whose extensive career in paramedicine offers a rare frontline to leadership perspective on emergency care. Together, Annie and Dr McLean explore what paramedics assess on scene, how to be better prepared for an emergency, and how tools like MedicAlert can bridge the gap when critical information matters most. Whether you've ever wondered what happens behind the scenes in an emergency or want to better understand how to prepare yourself or a loved one, this conversation offers practical insight into the realities of emergency response and the role that information plays in saving lives.   Learn More & Stay Connected If today’s conversation made you think that MedicAlert could be helpful for you or someone you care about: MedicAlert Foundation Australia * Website: Trusted medical ID and alert jewellery by MedicAlert® [https://www.medicalert.org.au/] * FAQs: Medical ID jewellery frequently asked questions – MedicAlert [https://www.medicalert.org.au/faqs] * Phone: 1800 88 22 22 * Email: enquiry@medicalert.org.au [enquiry@medicalert.org.au] * Donate: Donate to MedicAlert to protect lives with medical IDs [https://www.medicalert.org.au/donate?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Podcast&utm_campaign=26%27-Riverside-Donate] Get in touch with the podcast ·         Email: marketing@medicalert.org.au [marketing@medicalert.org.au] Follow MedicAlert on Social Media ·         Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/medicalert.au/]: @medicalert.au ·         Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/MedicAlertFoundationAustralia]: MedicAlert Foundation Australia ·         LinkedIn [https://www.linkedin.com/company/medicalert-foundation-australia/]: MedicAlert Foundation Australia This podcast is written, hosted, and produced by Anneliese Pittman, with support from MedicAlert Foundation Australia. Episode 1: Do I need a MedicAlert?

In this opening episode, host Anneliese Pittman (Annie) sits down with Dr Caroline Foreman, Medical Director of MedicAlert Foundation Australia, to answer a question many people don’t think to ask until it’s urgent: Do I need a MedicAlert? Choosing the first guest set the tone for the entire podcast- so who better than a clinician who understands emergencies, chronic conditions, and the real‑world impact of accessible medical information? Recorded at MedicAlert Foundation’s Head Office in Adelaide, Annie and Dr Foreman unpack common myths and misconceptions surrounding allergies and other medical conditions, highlight medical situations that are often overlooked, and explain who may benefit most from a MedicAlert. They also explore how MedicAlert works behind the scenes, including QR codes, digital medical records, and the introduction of new member cards featuring NFC technology. Whether you live with a medical condition, care for someone who does, or simply want to be better prepared, this conversation offers practical insight into how accurate medical information can truly change outcomes when moments matter most.   Learn more & stay connected If today’s conversation made you think that MedicAlert could be helpful for you or someone you care about: MedicAlert Foundation Australia * Website: Trusted medical ID and alert jewellery by MedicAlert® [https://www.medicalert.org.au/] * FAQs: Medical ID jewellery frequently asked questions – MedicAlert [https://www.medicalert.org.au/faqs] * Phone: 1800 88 22 22 * Email: enquiry@medicalert.org.au [enquiry@medicalert.org.au] * Donate: Donate to MedicAlert to protect lives with medical IDs [https://www.medicalert.org.au/donate?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Podcast&utm_campaign=26%27-Riverside-Donate] Get in touch with the podcast ·         Email: marketing@medicalert.org.au [marketing@medicalert.org.au] Follow MedicAlert on Social Media ·         Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/medicalert.au/]: @medicalert.au ·         Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/MedicAlertFoundationAustralia]: MedicAlert Foundation Australia ·         LinkedIn [https://www.linkedin.com/company/medicalert-foundation-australia/]: MedicAlert Foundation Australia This podcast is written, hosted, and produced by Anneliese Pittman, with support from MedicAlert Foundation Australia.
