Embracing the New Year with Intention

New Year’s resolutions are the worst. They almost always feel crappy and have an epic failure rate. I’m going to share my favorite alternative to setting resolutions so you can embrace 2023 with intention and excitement. You’ll also get to hear what intention I’ve set for the new year and get a bonus teaching on the difference between passive action and massive action.  To set your own focus and intention for the year, there are a few simple steps: 1. Ask yourself: what do you want to create more of in one area of your life in the next year? Pay close attention to what your gut response is, it can be that simple to find the answer. 2. Choose a theme that you have an emotional attachment to that you’ll be excited to remind yourself of for the year. 3. What do you need to let go of in order to support yourself in this theme of the year? I hope this gives you some inspiration for how to approach this for yourself. Please share what you’ve come up with. I’d love to hear it! 5 Tips to Feel Less Crappy on a Hard Day

I thought it would be fun to do an episode with my top tips for how to feel less crappy on the hard days, because who doesn’t like easy go-to tips when you’re feeling crappy? Whether you’re experiencing a flare, or catch COVID or the flu this winter, or maybe you’re just having a one off day of feeling crappy, these tips are going to be so helpful. What I love about these tips is you can apply them in your life whether you’re new to thoughtwork or a seasoned pro. You might already know some of these, but I encourage you to really listen because oftentimes the tools and resources that help the most are simple–but they only work if you actually use them, and use them often to make a habit of it. Just because something is common knowledge doesn’t mean you’ve made it a common practice in your life. So I’m breaking these tips down to their basics to make them approachable and doable even when you’re feeling your worst. episode Unlearning Perfectionism artwork

Unlearning Perfectionism

Today I want to talk to you about unleashing radical wellbeing by unlearning perfectionism. If you’re feeling stuck and want to make progress in your life, make sure you pay attention because today’s conversation might just be exactly what you need to hear to start breaking free from perfectionistic thinking. Many of us have bought into the fantasy that perfectionism will keep us safe. But in reality, perfectionism is a flimsy armor at best, it’s a mask that gives a false sense of safety.  Perfectionism is how we try to avoid and minimize shame, judgment, and blame. I think this comes up as a coping mechanism with chronic illness often because we are encountering both external and internalized ableism. We associate health with being good and sickness with being bad. Our society not so subtly teaches us to believe that health is something that is earned through discipline and being a good person. And as a result, if someone is unhealthy or disabled, it must be a result of their own failing and lack of effort. And so we turn to perfectionism in an attempt to reduce the shame of internal and externalized ableism. We hope that if we follow the rules perfectly, we will earn our health and be in good standing with ourselves and others once again. I’ll give you some specific examples of how perfectionism can show up in direct relationship with chronic illness. I’m going to give you two examples so you can start looking for it in your own life, and how to use thought work to begin unlearning perfectionism. episode How to Get Unstuck artwork

How to Get Unstuck

Something that I find really interesting about humans is that we crave newness and Novelty but we're also really scared of change and uncertainty–it’s a huge contradiction. What I love about thought work is that we get to observe those contradictions and choose what we want to do about them. We want our life to be different, but we don’t want to take the action necessary to create change.  When you feel stuck, your life is in a state of stagnation–you’re not growing, you’re not trying new things, you’ve gotten comfortable with the status quo and aren’t motivated enough to really shift it. The #1 reason people get stuck is that they don’t know how to manage their relationship with discomfort. You get to choose between the discomfort of being stuck and the discomfort of growth. This topic is something that’s discussed a lot in personal growth and success, but I think it’s an especially juicy topic for those of us who live with chronic medical conditions. That’s because our circumstances and medical conditions are a reliable and constant source of discomfort, so we are more familiar with being uncomfortable than your average bear. You might be burnt out by all the discomfort you’ve experienced and just want to be done with it. If that’s how you’re feeling, then this episode is even more relevant for you, because the only way to get relief is to shift the way you perceive and think about this topic. Get intentional about doing the things that your future self will thank you for. Get out there this week and do something uncomfortable on purpose! episode Mindbody Resilience in the Making artwork

Mindbody Resilience in the Making

Autumn is my favorite time of year. The sun is shining and there’s a crispness in the air, but I’ve had a challenging week. With all the work I’ve been doing and all the ideas flowing through my mind, my sleep has been disrupted and I managed to seriously throw my back out just from sleeping in weird positions. Managing the acute pain from that and still trying to get my work done has been a challenge. However, I have found that I’ve built a resilience that allowed me to heal, rest, reflect, and still get things done. Resilience is the ability to navigate, adapt, and learn from adversity and challenging circumstances. It's also the ability to maintain and return to a baseline that is both emotionally and physically functional. * Resilience is acceptance. There will be challenges, and they are natural and expected. * Resilience is intentional love and acceptance of yourself. * Emotional and physical resilience work together to form mindbody resilience. Mindbody resilience is the combination of your body’s natural physical resilience and your intentional emotional resilience that you can cultivate. Together they create a positive feedback loop that supports each other. In this episode, I will teach you some basics for how to build your emotional resilience and start to rewire your brain’s stress response.
