'White Nanny, Black Child' is a documentary about West African children (many Nigerian) who were privately fostered by White British families in a practice known as 'farming'. The documentary won the 2024 BAFTA Television Award for Specialist Factual amongst other awards. It is believed that over 70,000 West African children were 'farmed' between 1950s - 1990; some of the children returned to their families and sadly some did not. Ruth's parents are Nigerian; she was born, raised and lives in the UK. Ruth is young, beautiful, smart, ambitious, intelligent, brave, strong, hard working (she is a model and also works her regular day job), the list goes on...... Ruth has sickle cell in this episode, we have a candid, funny, uplifting chat about sickle cell including managing life (and pain) and relationships. Ruth is more than her genotype and has refused to let sickle cell get to run the show! I learned so much listening to this amazing, black queen's life journey. As a community, we must continue to raise awareness about these issues that affect us; knowledge is power.
