The Unexpected Key to Break Stereotypes

“Stereotypes put you in a cage. You’re Asian. Australian. Woman. Man. People of Colour, Angelo…. May you’re feeling this now  But what if I told you that while stereotypes put us in a cage, our fight against them creates the lock? — How? The more we fight against these labels, the more we exhaust ourselves by trying to prove we’re something that we’re not.” Welcome back to No Language barriers! welcome back to No Language Barriers! Today, I want to take you behind the scenes of a moment that still feels surreal—my recent TEDx talk at TEDx Power St ARISE, the first ever TEDx event created 100% by and for the next generation of Asian-Australians. With the overarching theme being Asian-Australians Reimagine  my talk was named ‘How Being More Asian Helped Me Break Asian Stereotypes.’ As the name suggests, the concept of stopping the fight might sound ironic. Because for years, I thought the only way to succeed was to prove I wasn’t ‘too Asian.’ But the truth? The moment I stopped fighting that identity and started embracing it, everything changed. So today, I want to share: ✅ The pressure I once felt to ‘assimilate’ and what that cost me ✅ A behind-the-scenes look at the message of my TEDx talk ✅ How you can use your cultural identity as a superpower—no matter where you’re from If you’ve ever felt like your background is something you have to ‘overcome’ to fit in, this episode is for you."
