Rewriting the Script: Jaja Soze on Life After the Streets

In this episode of Outside In, Richie & Khaliyah sit down with Jaja Soze—rapper, activist, and one of the most influential voices to come out of the UK’s street culture. Raised between Birmingham and Brixton, Jaja got involved in crime from a young age and ended up in prison in the 1990s—back when there were no TVs in cells and you were still slopping out with a metal bucket. He talks honestly about life back then, how PDC came to be labelled a 'gang' and what it took to truly turn things around. Today, Jaja’s using his experience to help young people find a different path—through music, business, mentoring, and community work - He’s building a legacy that’s about growth, not just survival. 🔗 Explore more of Jaja’s work here: linktr.ee/jajasoze [https://linktr.ee/jajasoze] ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Breaking the Cycle: Outside/In with Trailblazers Mentoring”

In this episode of Outside/In, we’re spending time with Trailblazers Mentoring, a charity that supports young men in prison and after they get out through one-on-one mentoring and real-life support. Each year, they work with around 150 people, starting about six months before release and continuing for up to a year on the outside. We hear from Yemi, one of the mentors, and Kyle, who connected with Trailblazers while in prison. Kyle was released last yea and since then, a lot has changed for him. He’s now at university studying Business Management and working with Trailblazers to support others. He recently gave a guest talk at the University of East London to youth work students about what it really takes to work with young men in the justice system. It’s a conversation about second chances, showing up for people, and what happens when someone believes in you—even when the system doesn’t. Alongside her, we hear from other cast members and Esther, the Artistic Director of Synergy. Designing a better future : Outside In goes Inside Out

In this episode of Outside In, we visit the Inside Out Clothing Project [https://www.insideoutpjt.com/]—the UK’s first clothing label designed and created entirely by young people with lived experience of the justice system. Founded in 2022 by journalist Greg McKenzie, Inside Out isn’t just about clothes. It’s about creating real job prospects for young people leaving prison by offering hands-on training in fashion, design, and business. Every piece is made by participants who bring not just skill, but their own stories of resilience, hope, and ambition. With support from LinkedIn and coverage on major news outlets like BBC, ITV, and Sky, Inside Out has become a movement—not just a brand. All proceeds go back into the community interest company, to help expand the program to reach thousands more over the next five years. This is a story about second chances, stitched together by the people determined to take them. We speak to Greg McKenzie, Lawrence, Jo and Rebecca and hear how Inside Out has changed lives and their plans for the future.
