episode A Conversation With Two Australian Farmers, the Fertiliser Shock and the Future of the Family Farm cover

Description

Fresh from the fiftieth birthday party and Cereals, we sit down with two farmers who have come a very long way to be here, brothers David and Ed Cox from Western Australia. With one of them due to fly home within the hour, we take the chance to talk honestly about what farming looks like on the other side of the world, and how many of the same pressures are being felt everywhere. We get into the global fertiliser and fuel shock and how war and wider disruption have hit supply and pricing, the extraordinary story of clearing five thousand acres of failed carbon scheme woodland to build a farm at Esperance, and the big question hanging over agriculture in both countries, whether the family farm can survive rising land values, capital gains tax and succession, or whether the future is corporate. We also talk through a major shift in their business, cutting back on wheat and pushing livestock towards half of the operation, and share some honest and at times provocative views on commodity prices, whether the world really needs to grow more food, and where farming goes from here. From global markets to the future of the family farm, this is an honest conversation behind the scenes of modern farming, on both sides of the world. 0:00 Intro 0:49 What's happening in Australia 1:13 The fertiliser and nitrogen shock 2:31 How Australian fertiliser supply works 6:22 Clearing the trees to build a farm 10:13 Splitting the family business 15:42 Two brothers, two businesses 17:00 Land values, capital gains tax and succession 19:18 Is this the end of the family farm? 21:32 Plateaued yields and a fertiliser tax 24:39 Are we really growing too much food? 26:33 The Monday fertiliser scramble 27:46 The fuel supply worry 31:12 Cutting wheat, doubling livestock 35:18 The protein debate 36:43 Excited by the challenge, or adjusting? 43:04 Good rains and the season ahead Contact: Email: media@pxfarms.com #Farming #Agriculture #FarmingUK #AustralianFarming #AusFarming #FamilyFarm #Fertiliser #Livestock #Dairy #FarmingPodcast #GlobalFarming #ArableFarming #FarmLife #Harvest2026 #PXFarms Thank you for watching and supporting our farming journey! Testing the Combines and Checking the Barley and Raffling Off The Range Rover!

Get Your Tickets - https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/products/range-rover-raffle-ticket This is the moment we have been building towards all season. Harvest 2026 is finally here, and the combines are rolling into the barley. In this episode we take the first samples of the year, sweat on the moisture and the all important bushel weight, and find out whether the crops are going to be as kind as we hoped after such a difficult dry run. With four combines, chaser bins and lorries all coming to life at once, we also meet this year's harvest team, a brilliant international crew from Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, and explain the system that keeps it all running smoothly. Behind the scenes there is a new grain testing machine to speed up the weighbridge, the new fertiliser store taking its first tanks, and the small army of jobs it takes to get day one right. It is not all work. James is raffling his beloved green Range Rover, the swimming pool is finally being filled ready for the harvest party, and the famous harvest meal rota is revealed. We finish with the latest grain prices and an honest look at where the market sits as the first loads come in. From the first cut to the team behind it, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. The Final Days Before Harvest, Walking the Crops and the Damage Being Done to Our Land

Harvest is now just days away, and everything is coming together. In this episode we walk the crops one last time before the combines roll, checking over the wheat, the oats and the barley, weighing up the yield potential after a difficult dry spell, and allowing ourselves a little cautious optimism that it could be better than we feared. Behind the scenes the harvest team complete their health and safety and first aid training, the chaser bins and firefighting kit get their final checks, and the new fertiliser store edges closer to taking its first tanks. We also explain a big rotation decision for the year ahead, with oilseed rape coming back in, and what that could mean for the bottom line. It is not all plain sailing. We deal with yet more fly tipping and a frustrating exchange with the council, and take an honest look at the damage being done to our land by the major infrastructure projects crossing the farm. With the team buzzing and the bets on for the first day of cutting, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. episode The Final Countdown to Harvest 2026, and the Fertiliser Squeeze on the Horizon artwork

The Final Countdown to Harvest 2026, and the Fertiliser Squeeze on the Horizon

It is the final week before harvest, and there is a huge amount to get done. In this episode we get the combines and chaser bins fired up and ready, fill the tanks with fuel, welcome the harvest team back for the season, and work through the long list of jobs that has to be ticked off before the first field is cut. We also sit down for two proper deep dives. First we talk grain store hygiene with Tony, the self styled guardian of the grain, covering how to keep stored grain in top condition, the truth about smoke bombs, and the new rules on rodent control. Then John Fuller joins us to inspect the new fertiliser store and bund, and to give an honest and slightly worrying look at where the fertiliser market is heading, from the global nitrogen squeeze to the case for buying early. Elsewhere on the farm there is concrete going down, a clever trailer conversion taking shape, the pool nearing completion for a pre harvest splash, and the barley getting closer to ripe with a big heatwave on the way. From honest expert conversations to the last jobs before the combines roll, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. episode Celebrating James' 50th Birthday, the Party of the Year and the Countdown to Harvest artwork

Celebrating James' 50th Birthday, the Party of the Year and the Countdown to Harvest

This week we celebrate a big one, James' 50th birthday, with a party that will take some beating. We open the doors on the shed for the first time to see it transformed, with the combines lined up as the centre piece, a disco ball overhead and 450 friends ready to dance. There is food cooked over the fire pits, two bands, and the now famous tale of just how many bags of oak it really takes to cook for a crowd that size. Once the celebrations are behind us, it is back to business. We see the Trailer of Dreams in one piece after a muddy but brilliant Cereals, show you the new offices to let at the Irwin Centre, and float an idea we would love your thoughts on, ticketed harvest experiences out in the field. With the party cleared away, attention turns firmly to harvest. We get the combines fuelled and ready, welcome the harvest team back for the season, talk protein results and T3 spraying, and ask the big question, just how soon will we be cutting? From a once in a decade celebration to the first real signs of harvest, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
